How to Prepare for Your Trip

You’ve been working hard for months, and looking forward to this vacation for even longer. Now is the time to prepare. You’ll need a few things, and you’ll need to follow a few precautions to help you enjoy your trip to the fullest.

1. Packing: Take everything you need, then get rid of half of it. Most people tend to over pack, which can lead to stress and can cause more inconvenience than you can imagine. With airlines charging extra for every amenity, you want to be able to take your baggage and go, when you get off the plane. Furthermore, heavy bags can be bad for your physical health, putting unnecessary strain on your back and neck. Of course, what you pack should be dictated by where you’re vacationing and what time of year it is. The thing is, most people look in their closet and take what they like, instead of what they need. A good rule of thumb is one outfit per day, and a one nice outfit for when you go to an expensive restaurant, if you’re traveling to a large city. Choose dark clothing so that stains don’t show if you get them dirty.

2. Guidebooks: Are very helpful, but take up a lot of room and weigh a lot. Unless you need the whole thing, photocopy the pages you think you’ll use. While you’re at it, photocopy your passport and identification, and keep the originals in a safe in your room, or another safe place, just in case. If you’re traveling to a land where they speak a different language, a phrasebook can be very helpful.

3. Lodging: After your Europe airline tickets, what can cost the most is lodging. When you hear the phrase hostel, you might shiver and envision moldy showers and cockroaches, but most European hostels are of the bed and breakfast type, and offer private rooms. These are much cheaper than hotels, and the money that you save on lodging can be put towards day excursions, and food and drink.

4. Staying in touch: If you’re going away for a week or more, you may want to contact people from home. International calling cards are feasible, but if you’re crossing more than 3 time zones, it can be difficult to get in touch. The same goes for Skype. E-mail is always great, but if you really want to impress your friends and family, send them a postcard – they’ll be able to keep it forever, and it feels more personal than electronic messaging.

5. Comfort: You may be thinking about looking your best, but again, if you have to bring a ton of stuff to look good, it may not be worth it, unless the purpose of your trip is clubbing. Lip balm, sunglasses, some lotion, and maybe your shampoo are good things to bring, because even if you stay in a hotel, you may not have ready access to these items.

These tips should give you a pretty good idea of what you will need for your trip. Don’t stress, and have fun!
