Your dad is hard to shop for. He’s not doing it on purpose. But trust me, he doesn’t want you to pick out his shirts, nor does he want another hilarious wall-mounted singing fish. He loved that fish. It’s hanging in the garage, see? You did great last year. But one is enough. He’ll be happy to see you on Father’s Day, happy to step behind his mahogany bar and dust off the old barware, pour you a drink, then walk you leisurely through the garden and show you how his tomatoes are growing (what is he, magic? your tomatoes are all legs so far). He’ll be more than happy to grill you a steak, even grill your vegan teenager a veggie dog, just as he was always happy to loan you the car, or some money, but he really doesn’t need a gift. Your presence is enough. Would that it were, but your heart is set on finding something to show the guy how much you love him. Something he’ll actually like, and use. Something that will show him you’ve grown up all right. Probably something that doesn’t sing. Here’s a hint. Go back to the bar. How happy was he pouring you that drink? How happy were you, receiving it, lifting it in toast? What better symbol could there be of father and grown child, enjoying each other’s company on a fine summer day? Eureka! Barware: the gift your dad will actually use. Here are some pieces he might not have already, and that we’ll think he’ll positively, really, honestly love. Glass Animale Ice Bucket - For the man who favors hunting trophies and likes champagne on ice. Glass Pilsners With Pewter Animal Heads - An alternative to the ice bucket, if he’s more into beer than bubbly. Thomas Jefferson Covered Spirit Decanter - This is a reproduction of a design owned by Thomas Jefferson. What dad doesn’t want to be affiliated with the author of the Declaration of Independence? Nascar Drink Dispenser Number 88 - Some men love fast cars and liquor. Here’s a whimsical, safe way to enjoy both at once, and ensure no spillage for the pit team to mop up. Johnson's Crystal Curved Top Whisky Tot Set - Cleverly designed by a noted Scotch whiskey authority, these glasses stand 3 1/2" high and offers 2 cut measuring lines, to ensure the perfect serving. Impress him with your own barware expertise by memorizing this: the lower line is cut at 1 oz to measure the traditional "wee dream" of Scottish ancestry, while the upper line is cut at 5 oz. , the traditional "gill". Antique Pewter Plated Champion Handled Wine Opener - If dad’s got a touch of arthritis in his hands, he can still do the honors of opening the bottle. Taverna Pewter Set Of 6 Decanter Tags - For the father who prides himself in his top shelf and wants his guests to know what they’re being treated to. (Or if he’s been a wee bit forgetful lately?) Want to see dad happy this June? Give the man his barware. Let him pour you that drink.
