Choosing Veneers for Your Custom Wood Doors

If you have an old record player or bookshelf with an intriguing wood pattern, chances are you're looking at veneer paneling. Veneer panels are thin pieces of wood (1/8 inch or less) that are applied to the exposed services of variety of projects—everything from tables and chairs to custom wood doors and cabinets.

Veneers are essential to many aspects of construction, including residential and commercial wood doors. Most door distributors often several dozen hardwood veneers standard, with the option to order more specialized wood species. When browsing veneers online or in a catalogue, it's best to request a physical sample to get a sense of the grain in person.

Veneer paneling gives the illusion of a solid wood core, but projects' actual cores are generally made out of particle board, MDF, or more affordable species of wood. Because veneer panels are so thin, woodworkers are able to create projects with rare and exotic lumber that would be much more expensive in thicker quantities.

Along with saving money, veneer panels make it possible to incorporate exotic and delicate wood species into projects that call for durability. Solid lumber will eventually warp from exposure to humidity, but ready-to-assemble or pre hung doors with veneer paneling and MDF cores will last for much longer. Veneer panels can even be used for fire rated doors, which must conform to strict industry standards for withstanding smoke and fire.

Veneer panels can be classified in a variety of ways, including country of origin. Domestic veneers are cut from lumber grown in North America, while exotic veneers are imported from other countries. Certain types of wood grow both internationally and domestically, however the appearance might differ by location. For example, oak trees are prevalent with Europe, North Africa, Western Asia, and North America, but they are available in several different types, such as English Brown Oak, which gets its dark color naturally from fungus that grows in the region.

Alternatively, veneers can also be classified by grain. Plain sliced veneers feature classic wood textures, which generally appear as vertical lines. For a more interesting look, many prefer burl veneers, unique for their swirling designs reminiscent of marble. Although often very beautiful, these patterns are actually deformations in the wood caused by insects, mold, and other factors. Flame veneers, also known as crotch veneers, are harvested from divides in the wood, which occur when a tree trunk splits or forms a limb. The result is a featherlike grain that is also very popular.

In addition to natural patterns, veneer panels can also be dyed, from neutral colors like black, white, and gray to exciting shades of purple and orange. Dyed veneer panels are ideal for children's furniture, in addition to certain dramatic design statements.

Ready to use veneer paneling for your next project? You won't be the first, and you definitely won't be the last. Believe it or not, veneering dates back to the Ancient Egyptians, who used the method to decorate furniture and ceremonial tombs.
