The safety needs of data centres are very significant. There needs to be 24 hour security available to prevent and deal with any security breaches that may be attempted. Data centers have a big role of ensuring that customer data that is hosted in their building is not accessed unlawfully. Failure to guarantee the safety of customer data can expose the data center to legal problems, loss of business and also other serious effects. For these reasons, arranging a visit to your colocation data center will naturally require some prior planning and communication with the data center.

Different from other forms of data centers Colocation data centres have a fragile balancing. They are hosting client hardware which may require frequent access as compared to situations where the hardware is owned by the data center. For this reason, most colocation UK data centers will request each client to provide a list of individuals who are to be allowed access. In most cases the number of individuals to be allowed access depends on the number of servers hosted. Smaller customers will of course have fewer people let in. There will also be a maximum number of persons even for big clients.

Once the list has been agreed upon, the customer is required to give the required documents and information of the persons to be given access. After this, those on the record can call in to book access times into the data centers. Yet again, depending on how many servers you have hosted, you can expect 24 hour access or working hour access to your servers. The 24 hour access comes with additional cost as all persons accessing the data center will be escorted so as to ensure the security of servers belonging to other clients.

In most cases, everyone who is to be allowed access into the colocation data center must go through induction where they are taught about the acceptable procedures and security requirements. This is done to make sure the safety and security of every server hosted in the co-location data center. In case one of the individuals on the list needs to be replaced or removed, it is the responsibility of the client to inform the data center at the earliest possible opportunity.

All non emergency visits to the data center require a notice of at least 24 hours. Communicating your aim to visit some days before is beneficial to both the customer and data center. You stand a better chance of getting a time slot that works best for you. In a circumstance where you have different lockable space for your servers, the data center can offer an access card that would help you have many unescorted access to your servers.

Each colocation data center will have their unique security requirements and procedures and it is important to understand them from the onset. Failure to comply will automatically deny you or your staff access to the servers. Although it may appear to be too strict, access to co-location data centers ought to be controlled in order to guarantee the safety of each server including yours.
