Colds and flus are most prevalent during the winter months. As cold weather approaches, many may be wondering what they can do to prevent colds and flus this winter season. One of the best ways to prevent colds and flus is to boost the immune system. There are several simple ways in which individuals can boost their immune systems and give them the edge they need to fight off colds and flus. By following these effective strategies, individuals may not have to deal with the runny nose and sniffles all winter long.

Get an Influenza Vaccine -

First and foremost; one of the most important proactive measures individuals can take to prevent the flu is getting a flu vaccine. Flu vaccines are approved for individual's age 6 months and older. They are ideal for both healthy individuals and those with chronic medical conditions. A flu vaccine will not cause an individual to develop the flu, but they may experience some short-term side effects such as fever and aches. Yearly flu vaccinations are important to maintaining good health throughout the influenza season.

Antioxidants are Essential -

Antioxidants, such as those found in raw fruits and vegetables, help to protect the immune system's cells. Raw fruits and vegetables are also rich sources of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and fibres. All of these nutritional elements are essential to overall health and wellness. Fruits and vegetables such as berries, kale, broccoli, and seaweeds are excellent sources of vital antioxidants.

Adequate Water Intake is Important -

Put down the coffee and soda, and drink plenty of water instead. Water is important to the body for many reasons. Thirst and headaches are both signs that the body is dehydrated and in need of water. It is recommended that individuals strive to drink a minimum of eight glasses of water each day.

Proteins are Building Blocks -

Individuals that want to achieve a healthy mind and body need to make certain they eat enough protein each day. Protein is crucial to the development of a healthy immune system because it helps the immune system create the antibodies it needs to fight infection and disease. Protein can be used for energy, but it is best to let carbohydrates play this role. Carbohydrates are good and do serve an important purpose, but a diet high in carbohydrates and low in protein can be detrimental to one's health.
