Art and Theater Camps for Young Women Enrich Summer Experience

As summer quickly approaches, parents are seeking the perfect summer experience for their sons and daughters. A popular option is either a day or over-night camps. For young girls with an eye on stardom or skills in art inspired industries, a camp with an artsy focus may be just what your budding star is seeking.

Camps of every sort can be found around the world. They range from what is commonly called "traditional" to very specialized. Traditional formats are usually in a setting that offers assorted outdoor activities, such as swimming, boating, hiking, cooking, songs and stories around a fire pit, and learning how to live together in tents or cabins. The focus is usually on building socialization and team work skills, as well as enhancing self esteem.

Specialized formats are more skill building oriented in the child's specific area of interest and talent. These can include individual and group sports, computer use and programming, website building, animal husbandry, writing, and of course, for those who are more artistically and theatrically inclined, there are art and theater camps.

Art camps are very popular for those with an interest in areas ranging from theater to jewelry making, and everything in-between. Young girls have the opportunity to participate in many related activities. For example, a girl with theater or acting aspirations might wish to participate in performing arts training. This can encompass acting, dance, singing, props and stage building, production and director skills, make-up, etc. These combined skills will open more doors as your child finds she can call on what she has learned and apply it to her day to day life.

For the young artist, classes offered might include painting with different media, ceramics, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, and perhaps even fashion and jewelry making. This is a great opportunity for kids to experiment with multiple media to find the one that most piques their interest and best highlights their talents.

Both children and teens will enjoy taking home examples of what they created. Arts and crafts campers might even return home with the beginnings of portfolios. These can be shared with families and friends, and of course kept for a lifetime, giving them a point of reference to measure against as they grow older and more finely develop the skills learned.

For most youngsters, sleep-over camps are both exciting and scary. Parents should carefully check out the reputation of the owners/manager, ratios between girls and counselors, skill sets of instructors, as well as safety records and emergency preparedness. For longer term specialized camps, be sure to find out if parental visitation is permitted, and if other types of "traditional" camp activities are available. Even your older more independent kids can get home sick when away from home for extended periods of time.
