Keynote speakers set the tone for an event and can positively influence an audience both within the event and after the event has finished. There are different kinds of keynote speakers. For instance a keynote speaker can range from a celebrity to a business executive and this speaker may discuss general topics, for example encouraging large audiences to consider new kinds of markets, or focus on a particular goal in mind, for instance encouraging an audience to buy a particular product. When discussing a set topic, for example useful sales and marketing techniques, speakers need to have a wide range of personal experience in terms of their subject matter. This personal insight into a topic helps speakers to deliver confident speeches as they know what they are talking about. Additionally a competent keynote speaker researches the audience they will be giving their speech to and then the speaker customises their speech for the audience so that it is personalized to them. This assists the speaker in giving a confident speech as he or she knows it is directly relevant to the people being addressed. When a keynote speaker gives a speech at an event it is not necessary for the speaker to have the same background as his or her audience. For example corporate executives can be addressed by a sports team captain on developing successful leadership skills. Though they do not share the same backgrounds, the speaker and the businesspeople have probably encountered the same challenges, such as needing to inspire a tired team to work harder so they can achieve their goal. Some keynote speakers have a natural talent for public speaking whereas other speakers need to nurture and develop this talent. Often keynote speakers have attended some form of public speaking course which helps them to develop and hone their speaking skills. These courses teach the speakers how to perform confidently without appearing arrogant or aggressive. The speaker might learn to use body language on such a course in order to appear confident and also to hold the audience's interest. Additionally the practice that comes with delivering keynote speeches will enhance a speaker's confidence, as they learn the sorts of things that are well received by audiences and those that are not and the more they speak in front of people the easier it becomes. Things like visuals and audio within a speech can also help a keynote speaker. These can include photos, video clips, music and the like. Making use of these sorts of techniques engages an audience in a speaker's address, which boosts the confidence of the speaker in knowing that people are paying attention instead of losing interest. Additionally the speaker may get members of the audience to participate in his or her address, which is entertaining for the audience, keeps them on their toes and makes the address more personal.
