When planning a vacation trip to the southern United States, many people from around the world take advantage of the sights and sounds of Savannah, Georgia. As one of the top tourist hot spots in the south, the town has a whole host of attractions to make a small or extended visit worthwhile for all ages. With pristine waterways, beautiful architecture and a rich history, this southern jewel has much to offer. Savannah has one of the busiest ports in the United States. It runs through the historic district of the city and gives a view of the Talmadge Memorial Bridge. The city also boasts some of the most beautiful park squares in the world. There are 22 parks located in the historic district alone, all sharing a piece of Southern history. Architecture buffs that visit this fair city will not be disappointed. Many of the churches and synagogues still standing were built in the early 1800's and have been meticulously maintained to preserve their wonder and beauty. Other points of interest that should be explored during a visit to Savannah are the many Confederate memorials and historical houses such as the Sorrel Weed House, Wormsloe plantation, Mercer-Williams House and several others. This famous town is also home to rich culture in the form of art and music. People from all over participate in the diverse and exciting annual Savannah Music Festival. People from all walks of life come to enjoy and participate in this two-and-a-half week festival every spring. Savannah also offers many nature preserves and park trails, another draw for tourists. Tybee Island is home to the southern Atlantic coast's first lighthouse. There are also many small islands nearby that are accessible by ferry and offer a unique flair. Public transportation throughout town is more than adequate for the average vacationer. The city also features many sports arenas and even boasts a world famous 1/8th mile drag strip for NHRA events throughout the year. In addition, Grayson Stadium is home to Savannah's minor league baseball team, the "Prowl." Lodging options are many and varied, ranging from chain hotels to charming smaller inns and historic bed and breakfasts where you can experience Southern hospitality first-hand. Weather in the area is fairly nice even during the colder months, and the temperatures rarely fall below the freezing mark. Early spring and fall are considered to be some of the most beautiful times to visit Savannah due to the favorable climate and the vast array of color that comes with the change of the seasons.
