Walk-in bathtubs - also known as accessible or (in some cases) therapeutic bathtubs - are a godsend for disabled or elderly bathers with limited mobility. Although the concept sounds simple enough, there are a number of features that distinguish these kinds of tubs from other models. Even within the product line, there are a number of differences that warrant a closer look. Not surprisingly, consumers should carefully weigh differences in design and special features, since it is easy to miss a vital component to the suitability of these walk-in bathtubs. Good things to consider are the doors of therapeutic bathtubs. Some swing outward while others swing inward, and both features have disadvantages as well as advantages. Walk-in tubs with inward swinging doors are suitable for smaller rooms where an outward swinging door might collide with other doors or cabinetry. In addition, the weight of the water assists in creating a seal that prevents leakage, which may become an issue with outward swinging doors. On the flipside, emergency exit is barred by the weight of the water. Receiving emergency third-party assistance is also barred by the water weight as well as the body of the bather. Door latches are also important to check out. No one wants the door to open too easily, but the latch must release easily enough for those with injuries or arthritis so entering and exiting can be managed independently. Interior features of therapeutic bathtubs also vary. Built-in seats, double drains and even Jacuzzi jets may be offered in some models but not others. Acrylic-based materials are heavier and more expensive, while fiberglass allows for a lower weight on the house's supports but also tends to crack more easily. Medicare does not generally cover the expense of these tubs - unless a physician can make a compelling case for the need. Even then, only a portion of the cost may be covered. Savvy consumers should assume that they will shoulder the financial burden themselves, and therefore choose wisely which features and materials are the most important to them. Another aspect of therapeutic bathtubs that is frequently overlooked deals with the installation process. This is not a do-it-yourself project and requires the services of a licensed contractor, largely because the bracing and weight distribution of walk-in bathtubs differ from standard tubs. Add the fact that a dual or over-sized drainage system requires piping changes, and it only makes sense that a professional should be hired to complete this job. While the piping change is not an absolute necessity, consumers must remember that they cannot leave the confines of the bath until all the water is drained (to avoid flooding the bathroom). A standard drain may take a while to accomplish this task, and the bather is left to freeze. Last but not least, remember that therapeutic bathtubs are generally considered oversized; they come in one piece and must fit through doorways and hallways. Especially in smaller or older homes, sharp corners or narrow doorways present problems on delivery day. After narrowing down the choices to a number of attractively priced models with all the desired features, the consumer should measure each hallway and door opening to determine whether bringing the new tub into the house is going to present a problem.
