Key words are often important in a lot of different areas and disciplines. This is also true of the likes of web hosting, and specifically those who find that they are going into a business which deals heavily in this. Therefore, it is important to know differences between the likes of words such as uptime and availability, as the two at a glance appear to be the same. When talking about it, basically it is considered to be the length of time which a system or machine is able to be left running without crashing. Usually such machines and systems are the likes of operating systems, webhosting services and of course computers. Variations are also going to occur between these naturally, but there is a general consensus that this term refers to the unattended time a computer can be left. Once the time is up, it needs to be rebooted. A lot of the time, it is the administrator or the person who controls maintenance that will reboot the system. The whole machine must be allowed to run its proper course and therefore everything needs to be checked and kept in order. At times, users of the Internet are going to find that certain sites are unavailable to them and this is one of the causes. Servers have also been reported by companies which were said to have six years of uptime. Availability, or what is also known as high availability, is something not quite the same although it is easy to confuse the two. In essence this term will refer to the users of a particular system and their ability to access its services. Normally, people will want to be able to access it at all times and therefore high availability is something that is desired. The two terms themselves are incredibly easy to confuse, but availability is different in the sense that it literally only means the time that a particular system is available for the users to access. "Downtime" is when it is unavailable. It is probably this second word which is something that causes so much confusion amongst people and leads them into thinking they are the same in web hosting. Businesses and individuals who normally webhosting and web services and other similar systems are going to have to deal with times when their systems experience downtown. This can be used to go over things manually or automatically if they wish. Whilst it can cause some frustration for those on the other end, the best time for this is when there are very few users. Clients and businesses alike are always going to be searching for the best. By nature people are impatient, and want to access their systems immediately and have them working all the time. Nobody likes it if they switch on a television and find that a channel is down for repairs. Normally if something like this happens, people will flick over and look for something else. In a consumerist society, instant gratification is a key point. For any kind of company or enterprise, it is important to have the highest level of productivity at all times. Around the clock advertising will allow for greater profits to be generated. The more people who can access webpages, the more money a firm is able to make.
