Acupuncture is a word that many people know of, but few truly understand this medical procedure. The practice is centuries old, and shrouded by mystery for those unfamiliar. Many in the western world commonly think of it as a method to treat pain, but those intimately acquainted with the practice know it can also serve as a stress reliever and relaxation technique. For many illnesses and disorders, it can be an effective treatment, so Western medicine is beginning to adopt and utilize it for hundreds of health issues.

During pregnancy, acupuncture can be used for relief for women suffering from morning sickness. It is also being used for the labor process; to induce labor, to help reduce the pain from contractions, and even to re-position the fetus, if required. With a rising number of women choosing to use natural birthing techniques, this is also becoming an increasingly popular alternative to drugs during childbirth.

Acupuncture is increasingly prescribed for patients struggling with addictions to tobacco, alcohol, drugs and even food, as it is effective for treating mind, body and soul. Other mental health issues such as depression, schizophrenia and anxiety can often be eased with regular treatments by a practitioner alongside psychotherapy and/or counseling.

Studies show that using this medical practice to alleviate problems relating to stomach disorders and digestion problems like nausea, diarrhea, and heartburn are incredibly effective. Other related conditions involving the bladder and bowel functions. Perhaps the relaxation that people experience during the treatment assist with the improvement in the well being of the patient, though this has not been studied to any great extent.

More unusual, but equally successful applications are found in the dentistry field where it is successful in alleviating the pain associated with many procedures. Fear and anxiety related to dental procedures are widespread, and the use of acupuncture to relieve these symptoms has the potential to improve many people's feelings about dentists.

In other areas, it is more difficult to prove the effectiveness of using this ancient art, such as with stroke victims or other more complicated conditions like comas. Early studies with these patients, however, show the potential for great medical breakthroughs and continued expansion of the use of acupuncture. Awareness of healthy lifestyle and holistic health is emerging in the United States and many people are seeking the benefits of this ancient treatment even before consulting with a Western physician.

Whether used as a stand-alone procedure, in combination with other drugs, or holistic aides like cupping, electro-stimulation, and massage, the results of acupuncture are staggeringly positive.

Instead of the many negative side effects found in chemical treatments, it leaves its patients with an overall sense of well-being, peace of mind, and a healthy outlook as well as treating the existing condition. Last, but not least, an added benefit is there are no boundaries for its use as a treatment for illness. It is safe for both young and old, and in any degree of health. It is an old-world, holistic solution to many modern day ailments.
