Making Room For My New Favorite Designer Fashion Accessories

Designer fashion accessories are in no danger of extinction. No one is campaigning, for example, to save an endangered population of awesome Ed Hardy bags. Sure, trends enter and exit the spotlight with breathtaking speed—flip through one issue of Vogue and you’ll learn that floral, feminine dresses are in—no, tailored menswear-inspired suits—no, leather and stilettos—no, wait, just raid your boyfriend’s closet—no—hey, is that a Batman mask Lady Gaga is wearing? Are we wearing Batman masks now?

But that’s the fun of it, right? If you love designer fashion accessories like I love designer fashion accessories, you know that every new season, designers bring you thrilling choices. You know how exhilarating it can be—you’re riding that wave and the next thing you know, you can’t see the floor of your closet for the Jessica Simpson platform heels.

The Cochni leopard-print ankle boots. The Prada pumps, the adorable US Army high-tops, the London Sole ballet flats in five equally essential colors. You see what I’m getting at.

Sometimes I fantasize about a simpler life. You know, the one where I live in a hut on a beach, white sand stretched as far as I can see, mangos falling off the trees into my hands each morning, and all I have in my wardrobe is a white bikini.

One white bikini, that’s pretty much it.

Maybe a floppy hat.

Maybe sunglasses—it’s important to protect your eyes from UV rays. And flip-flops, of course. Sand gets hot.

And actually, you know what would be really cute over that bikini when it gets chilly at night? One of those Ed Hardy apparel hoodies. I’m probably there nursing some kind of romantic tragedy, and what says that better than sipping my piña colada with “Love Kills Slowly” emblazoned over my heart?

Plus, if you think about it, I should really have one sexy little dress, in case a hot fisherman comes sailing through and wants to go dancing. And in that case, strappy sandals. And isn’t this dancing scenario all the prettier if there are some fabulous gold earrings glinting in the moonlight?

Okay, so obviously the life I’m fantasizing about is not entirely free of designer fashion accessories. Where’s the fun in that? But if I’m not going to put a down payment on that beach hut in the next month or so, there are still ways to simplify:

1.A bag for Goodwill or Dress For Success clears some space in your closet and lets someone in need enjoy your gently worn clothes or designer shoes for women.

2.In some towns there are clothing swaps—check message boards for one in yours!

3.Consignment shops like Buffalo Exchange. I like handing over a bag full of things I’m not so interested in anymore and leaving with one fantastic new item, or the money to buy something new.

4.Websites that sell discounted designer fashion accessories. I’m addicted! How else could I keep up?
