Most people have little idea on how to give a proper after dinner speech. Before the actual speech an after dinner speaker must consider a lot of things. You must understand that you are not at a relative's social call. The main thing that an after dinner speaker has to consider the quality of the audience. Many similar events might have many among the audience who are much more well-informed and literate than the speaker. so, evaluation of listener is a necessary step before the actual speech. The audience can be assessed easy by the way they are dressed, the event that they are attending, male to female ratio, age of audience and many more. the speech must be prepared with the country where it will be given in mind, as not to offend anyone from that country. An after dinner speaker must do his research well before he speaks at the event.

Entertainment must be in the speech of after dinner speakers. Speakers must be able to look directly into the eye of anyone among the audience and address the in entertaining way.You must remember that you are not there to harass your audience. Engagement with the listeners should be done in friendly playful way.

Being nervous is not an option for an after dinner speaker. When a speaker becomes nervous his tone change and audience become dissatisfied with the given speech. Speaker must be confident and poised before speaking. After a speaker is at the view point of the listeners they must clear their head and after few seconds of pause start speaking positively. Starting off with a joke or for serious even starting off with a specific point in mind is always a good practice.

An after dinner speaker should not start his/her speech with a bundle of text in his/her hand. Normally audience do not prefer a speaker who reads off text. A good choice is cue cards. A speaker must understand that he is there to give a speech and not to read a book. So, after dinner speakers can have some cue cards in their hand and look them up when needed. Keep the flow of your speech and speak confidently.

Another thing an after dinner speaker must consider is never drink before you give a speech. Speaker must say sober when they speak. Audience is not there to hear a drunk's speech. The speech should be kept to the minimum length, that is a very important rule for after dinner speakers. You can entertain the audience for a particular amount of time but must not drag it to the point when they think they have had enough. The sign of a good speaker is that, they know just about when the audience have had enough and take their leave just before that. 20 minutes to 30 minutes is the ideal length for any type of after dinner speech.
