As a graduate student, having too many things to accomplish can be very stressful. Therefore, you need to learn how to manage your time effectively by following these simple tips: make a to-do-list, set deadlines, use calendars, prioritize tasks, utilize idle time, and be flexible.

Those who are taking advanced classes after earning a degree are referred to as graduate students. Several requirements such as conducting research, defending a thesis, taking comprehensive exams, and teaching schedules must be met in order to achieve success. With all the pre-requisites, it is expected that you will feel a lot of pressure, which can sometimes seem unmanageable. Having to perform all those tasks in a limited time frame can definitely be a source of concern. If you are not diligent in organizing tasks, you might end up losing your mind figuring out what to finish first. However, if you keep track of everything you do through time management you will have much-needed control of your life. Here are some tips on how to lead a well-organized life despite hectic schedule:

Make a to-do-list

List all tasks you must complete so that no assignment will be overlooked. This should include all meetings, classes, and events you need to attend so that you can include them in your timetable. Do this daily. Ideally, do this at night to prepare you for the next day's activities.

Set deadlines

If you need to finish paperwork or other projects, set your own deadline that is far from the actual date of submission. This will help you avoid rushing at the eleventh hour.

Use calendars

If you are too preoccupied with piles of coursework, you may arrange your plan ahead of time using a calendar approach. Your calendar could be on a weekly or monthly basis depending on your preference and convenience. If you want, you may also schedule your itinerary 1 to 2 years ahead so that you have a goal that is realistically achievable.

Prioritize tasks

Some people like the idea of setting schedules on a daily basis, as compared to advanced planning, since they find it more practical. To do this effectively you will need to prioritize your work according to the order of importance. As soon as you have completed a particular task, cross it off your list so that, little by little, you complete them all.

Utilize idle time

There may be times times when you need to travel long distances or stand in a long line waiting for your turn for a variety of reasons. When you have this idle time, which is nearly unavoidable, try turning it into something productive. Try reading your research work in preparation for the next day's defense or study for the upcoming assessment.

Be flexible

When your plans are disrupted by unexpected circumstances, do not be alarmed. Instead learn to adapt and be flexible. Never allow anything to get in the way of achieving your goals'especially a glitch in your schedule.

These suggestions might sound overwhelming and you may not know how to begin. But with practice and patience you will discover what techniques work for you. Don't give up! And remember, anything is possible when you are committed to making it happen.
