Multi Tasking Will Kill Your Business

By : Azmi Adnan

Sometime ago, multi-tasking was a very sexy word. Someone who multi-tasks is seen as efficient, versatile, skillful and a jack of all trades. This has caused companies to downsize as one employee can perform the job of two employees. Resumes are filled with skill sets that job applicants swear they can juggle. Do they really? If anyone says that he finds himself more productive and efficient in multi-tasking he would be lying. Does the bottom line of a company really improve with multi-tasking?

Studies have shown that multi-tasking lowers your IQ. When you are not focused on a certain task, productivity goes down. The brain just cannot register doing multiple tasks even if you don't see any actual reduction in quality of work. The end result is feelings of burn-out, stress that develops into anxiety, depression, mental disorder, and even health complications such as cancer, tumor and high blood pressure.

Multi-tasking is a common practice amongst internet entrepreneurs and one-man start ups when the budget is limited. That is when you want to figure out how to build the website, create compelling copy writing, add in the shopping carts and payment processing and last but not least, online marketing. While one man can do this, imagine if you have multiple websites and businesses and you are trying to do everything possible to get your websites to the top of the search engine results. It can drive you nuts.

The solution is to gradually empower others to do the job for you. Virtual assistants from outsourcers in third world countries where the cost of operation is much lower, can do an equally good job, if not better. This releases valuable time for you to concentrate on other projects, act on new ideas or expand your business. When the business is running on its own, it is time for you to let go and let others to take the wheel while you control its running by remote.

What can a VA do for your business? Virtually everything without being physically present infront of you. They can build your website or blog, write articles with SEO optimized keywords, market your online business, process delivery, answer customer calls, monitor sales, etc. The great thing about this is that you don't need an office to house the VAs and the cost of hiring their services is very affordable as compared to employing your local workforce.
