Getting old is a natural part of life. Many say that you’re only as old as you feel, which is largely true. But you can’t feel young if you aren’t staying healthy. This article has some basic tips to help you feel younger and be happier. 1. Nutrition: Eat a balanced diet of carbohydrates, fats, and protein. Older folks need lots of protein to help keep their muscles strong. This also helps to prevent diseases. Milk is a great source of protein, and can easily be added to many drinks, like hot chocolate, coffee, or tea. 2. Multivitamin: A vitamin is great if your diet suffers, if you have been ill recently, or if you are losing a lot of weight. It will give you more energy and keep your bones, immune system, and general health in better condition. Fruits and vegetables are the best way to get all of your vitamins, which is why a multivitamin is called a ‘supplement’. 3. Exercise: This one can be a doozy for a lot of people. They tell you to exercise every day, but it’s hard, and sometimes you just don’t feel like it. That’s okay. Exercise isn’t limited only to swimming, running or weight lifting, it also includes walking and standing. That’s right, standing. As long as you aren’t sitting down all day, you don’t have to worry. Walking around the house is another option, and if you’re really feeling zealous, try the stairs. Exercising with others is another great way to stay in shape – whether it’s your spouse or a class – having fun and going slow will help you maintain a routine. 4. Setbacks: If you have been injured or are convalescing, you might be undergoing physical therapy. If you’re not, but still have difficulty being mobile, a rolling walker is a great alternative to a cane. Standing up and moving around is important, even if you don’t get very far. 5. Family and Friends: As you age, you may be more and more sure of yourself and what you like. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t surround yourself with others. Talking on the phone, having visitors, and being generally aware of people will keep you healthy and happy. 6. Cognitive Activity: This is probably the most important part of this article! From reading, to crossword puzzles, to projects – really, anything that keeps your mind active will benefit you. 7. Home Safety: There are many potential safety hazards in your home. Frayed rugs, power cords, slippery bathtubs and loose railings can all pose a threat to your health. Take small steps to make your home safer. 8. Stay Positive: Being happy is a mindset more than anything else. If you feel spry and young, you will be. Don’t get down; stay busy by pursuing your passions and interests and you won’t ever be blue. There you have it. Getting old is natural, so why does it have to be hard? These 8 tips will lead you to keeping your golden years gilded.
