Now that you’ve made an investment that you can wear, you want to have it forever so that you can pass it on eventually to future generations. Your luxury watch is a piece of jewelry above all, so try to treat it as such. Taking good care of your luxury watch is not difficult, it simply requires dedication. 1. Since you will probably wear your watch very often, there are a few things to remember about how you wear it. Firstly, don’t expose your watch to extreme temperatures. Extreme cold can prevent your watch from running accurately and high heat can shorten the battery life. If you take off your watch when you go on a skiing trip or to Palm Beach, store it in a cloth. 2. If you wear your watch every day, it’s important to wipe it down before bed, so as to remove excess dirt, perspiration and dust. This will also alert you to any scratches on your watch, which in turn, will make you sensitive to how you wear it. Usually a mechanical watch should be serviced between two and three years, while a quartz watch takes a trip to the shop every three or four. 3. Most watches are made from gold or steel. Scratches on the watch casing are possible if you are working with tools or particularly hard materials, so take care to treat your watch gently. If you have a sapphire crystal, which is standard for most designer watches, then you needn’t worry greatly about scratches; sapphire crystals are extremely hard and have a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning that only diamonds (10) are harder. 4. Even if your watch is water resistant, it’s good to keep it dry. Most water resistant watches are made for short term exposure to water. Remember that water is capable of penetrating into the glass or gaskets, so don’t get cocky with your watch’s water resistant capabilities. If it gets wet, wipe it with a rag to remove water, and if you take a swim in a pool, a quick rub will remove the chlorine that could damage the watch. 5. If your luxury watch has a leather band, it is possible that it may weaken and tear over time. Ways to avoid this are through careful application of perfume and cologne, i.e. not directly on the band, awareness of the elements, and of course, keeping it dry. 6. Read your designer watch manual. Since every luxury watch is unique, it will have specialized tips about how to keep your watch in prime condition. 7. If your watch has a problem, by no means attempt to deal with it yourself, but instead bring it to a watch shop. The care you give your watch will help it last. Enjoy wearing your watch, and be kind to it. If you skimp on caring for your watch, then you may see the effects sooner rather than later.
