Your Cross Country Move Checklist

You may be moving for a new job, you may be moving to be closer to family, heck, you may be moving just for a change of pace. It doesn't matter, there are certain items that you need to attend to before you hit the road. If you follow this checklist, you'll be set in no time.

1. Decide what you're willing to keep and what you're willing to throw away. If you've had it forever, it might be time to chuck it. Pack all the stuff you want to keep, and if you have any valuables, it's probably a good idea to insure them. The only kind of insurance worth getting is replacement cost insurance. All of the other insurances are based on weight, which doesn't help if you're shipping granny's antique jewelry.

2. Take photographs if you have a lot of things. It's easy to lose a box on a big move. Pack all of the things from a room together, in order to keep the boxes organized. Number the boxes, and write the name of the room that you're moving so you aren't looking for the stuff from the guest bathroom with the stuff from the kids' rumpus room.

3. You can even list what goes in which box. If you happen to lose a box, you will know exactly what was in it, and how much it will cost to replace it.

4. Shop around for the cheapest movers and trucks. On a big move, it's usually better to hire professionals. They have more experience moving and assembling large furniture and won't scrape the walls of your new home. Ask people who have moved what the best companies are, and don't be afraid to negotiate on prices.

5. When it comes to your car, you have a couple of options. A cross country road trip is an epic journey. If this is something you're interested in, you need to think about the reliability of your car, and the expenses along the way. It's an active form of vacation - expenses and responsibilities include lodging, food, maintenance, weather and possible routes. The road trip is fun, but it's definitely something you have to be dedicated to - it will take at least a week, unless you intend to sleep in your car. And if you're going to drive, it's worth it to see the sights. Our country is vast, and has more diverse natural beauty than any other on earth.

6. Car transporting is another viable option. Car transport companies usually take about a week to ten days to move your car from one coast to the other, and shorter if you're moving a smaller distance. Most car transporters offerinsurance, so that if you see a ding on your car, they will reimburse you. Pictures are a good way to ensure that your car arrives in the condition you left it. Choose a company that is reliable and well priced. Flying to your new home and leaving the car transport to someone else is less stressful than taking the drive yourself, but don't forget to plan ahead for your transportation needs upon arrival. Once you have all of these things taken care of, take a breather. A cross country move is a big deal, and it can be stressful. After that, you can get excited. A new home means new people, places, and opportunities. Good luck, wherever you're headed!
