Mezzanine flooring is flooring that is installed above an existing space. If you want more space and don't want to do major renovating, a mezzanine floor is a good option. The unused space below a ceiling is utilised by having mezzanine floors, which comes in handy for storage for example and this is even more useful if there is not a lot of space below the mezzanine floor. A mezzanine floor provides increased safety as well because you don't have to have a cluttered floor space anymore which could cause people to trip. Having mezzanine flooring increases the value of a property or building as there is additional space, which is particularly useful in factories for example where potential buyers will want lots of space for machinery. If the building has a loft, an alternative to mezzanine floors is a loft conversion. This is a long and expensive process however and will likely require the people who use the building to find an alternate location for at least a few days due to health and safety reasons. The loft conversion would cause a great deal of noise and dust which would make it very hard to live or work in the building while the conversion was ongoing. A second alternative to mezzanine flooring is building an extension but this too is a pricey option that will take a while to implement and may force people to relocate for some or all of the extension-building duration. Also, to get planning permission to build an extension is much more difficult than to get planning permission to install a mezzanine floor. A third alternative is getting space through cupboards or lockers. Cupboards/Lockers consume floor space though, which means reduced space for people to move unrestrictedly. In addition you will have to account for the space required to open the cupboard or locker doors, which uses up even more space. You couldn't place desks right next to the cupboards for instance as you'd need to move them every time you wanted to open the cupboard. Smaller things could be placed in front of the cupboards but yet again these would need moving when you wanted to open the cupboard, which would be problematic. Shelving can offer additional space but it might be tricky to reach items on the top shelves, especially if the shelves are very high. To reach the top shelves may necessitate the use of ladders, which people could potentially fall off of and thereby hurt themselves or others nearby. Shelving also takes up valuable floor space. A fifth alternative is to rent space at another location, for example renting storage space or an additional office space. This alternative can cost a lot of money, either through monthly rent payments or a hefty annual payment which could put stress on a business's budget having to pay it all at once. This alternative is also not practical if you have to stretch a business over two locations far away from each other or require frequent access to the items you are storing in another location potentially far away. All in all mezzanine flooring stands out as the best option for obtaining additional space.
