Fun Staycation Ideas

With the cost of travel always on the rise, families are constantly searching for affordable and innovative ways to enjoy time together during the summer—including alternatives to the traditional "summer vacation" model. The most common alternative, of course, is the staycation, an idea based on taking time off to spend together but not leaving your own town. The effect this can have on your budget is, of course, fairly obvious; there's not gas or air fare to worry about, and not necessarily a hotel fee either, though some families choose to do the "staycation" within local lodgings. The question, though, is how to make this experience a memorable one for you and your kids. Here are a few creative suggestions.

First, why not try engaging in a local activity that you generally don't participate in—for example, a trip to the local ice chalet? Skating can be a terrific source of family fun, and most areas have an ice skating rink that is open year-round. Admission is usually relatively inexpensive, and it can provide hours of enjoyment—and physical activity! Or for something a little more on the intellectual or artistic side, try heading to a local art museum. Again, admission is usually relatively inexpensive, and it's not only a great way to spend an afternoon—a rainy one, in particular—but it will provide stimulating conversation topics for the members of your family. When the trip is over, you can compare favorites and discuss the different cultures or techniques that you saw on display.

Additionally, you can probably think of some even more off-the-beaten-path ideas. For instance, some towns are the home to baseball spring training. Going to watch these training activities can be a great alternative to the huge crowds and high prices of official games. And if your town doesn't have this option, maybe it does have a pond or marina somewhere where you and your family can enjoy fishing, wading, or simply a pleasant outdoor stroll.

The great thing about a staycation, though, is that you don't necessarily have to seek out venues like these in order to have a good time. Really, you have everything you need for a great family staycation right under your own roof. For example, you could plan a family cooking now—a great way to encourage togetherness and get some tasty food! You could take to the backyard and host a tournament for croquet, or some other such backyard game; you could even invite your friends and neighbors. Of course, there's always the tried and true standby—the family board game night. Or for those who prefer something closer to the cutting edge, how about a family video game night?

The possibilities are limitless. With some resourcefulness and creativity, there's no reason why you can't make your family staycation into one of the most memorable experiences you and your clan have ever shared together.
