Family Road Trip Games!

There's no better way to grow closer as a family—to truly savor quality time with one another—than to take a family road trip. But of course, it isn't always fun and games. If you're a kid and you've ever been on a long car ride, you know how tedious and boring it can become; likewise, if you're a parent who has ever embarked on a long family road trip, you know how quickly cabin fever can set in, and how frustrating the pleading "Are we there yet?" inquiries can be. That's why it's always good to set out on a road trip fully prepared—not just with snacks and pillows, but also with a stock of family car games.

A lot of these games are word-based, of course. For instance, most of us are familiar with the Geography Game. It works like this: One family member says the name of a city that begins with the letter A; the next family member has to follow suit, but with the letter B; and so on. Of course, this game can be customized in any number of ways. Instead of cities, for instance, you can make it countries—or, you could make things tougher by restricting it to only U.S. cities. To make it really tough, try this rule: Instead of starting with the next letter in the alphabet, a player has to start with the last letter of the previous player's answer! And of course, you can break away from the geography theme altogether; try it with Things You Can Buy in a Grocery Store, for instance.

You can also have fun with the license plates of other cars on the road. You could simply keep a running tally of all the different states you see represented—and see it you can spot all fifty! Or to spice things up a little, try making your own License Plate Match cards. This is fast-paced fun that everyone in the car can enjoy. (Well, maybe not the driver!)

You can probably think of plenty of games to stretch your family's collective brain power. A good one: An old-fashioned family spelling bee. Or, you might test one another's creativity; try a family storytelling exercise. One family member can start spinning a yarn, and pass the baton to the next family member in line whenever he or she chooses!

And if these options don't sound appealing, you can always try testing one another's powers of observation. Try doing this with a travel scavenger hunt. See who can spot all the items on the list first; some suggestions might be a white water tower, a brown cow, or anything else you can think of. The possibilities for these family road trip games are as endless as your own imaginations; there's never any reason to settle for a boring car ride when you've got these inventive gaming ideas tucked away in the back of your mind!
