When you think of the best football tactic, it can be tough to decide on which is the most effective. Both teams have to be talented at offense as well as defense, and you need players who are versatile enough to handle both sides of the ball. It's impossible to keep the ball from the other team for the whole game, so you need to have a strategy for handling defensive as well as offensive attacks. Keeping it on Offense The most aggressive football tactic is to simply maintain possession of the ball as long as possible. Wear the other team down by making easy passes along the perimeter until someone on defense steps out of position and you can take advantage of the resulting breakdown. It takes quite a lot of patience and dextrous ball handling to play this keep-away game, and as the other team becomes more frustrated they will begin to get more aggressive in their attempts to strip the ball. Short, easy passes are the best tactic if you want to keep the ball from the other team. Longer passes have a greater chance of being diverted before they reach the intended player. Winning through Defense The opposite football tactic is to allow the other team to keep the ball while your team heavily defends your end of the field. This tactic works best if you have a lead and simply want to prevent the other team from scoring. You can kill a lot of clock time and tire the other team if you put most of your players on your end of the field and just frustrate the other team's attempts to get near the goal. Be careful, though, this tactic only really works if you have a talented defensive team. Using the Wings The wing players give you a more flexible football tactic. You can create new avenues of attack when your wingers control the ball into the net. The centers from the defense may shift out of position to chase down a winger who controls the ball, which also gives you an opportunity to pass inside and take a shot from an uncovered area of the field. When a wing man on one side of the field is having trouble, he can loft the ball over the players in the center and get it to the wing man on the other side for a quick strike. Take Advantage of Freebies Every game includes free kicks, corner-kicks, and throw-ins. A good football tactic should include ways to take advantage of these opportunities so that you can score quickly. Many teams who don't have the necessary skills required to dominate the game during a normal press will make the most of these set-plays. If you load up the scoring box with players, you may have a chance to converge on the ball when it comes into play and shoot it through the inevitable coverage gaps from the defensive team. It doesn't always work, but it is worth practicing.
