The Difference Between Artificial Insemination and En Vitro Fertilization

By : David Patullo

Both artificial insemination as well as en vitro fertilization both involves getting a woman pregnant due to infertility issues. These techniques require no sexual intercourse and are both rather simple and well-known. Artificial insemination first made its debut in the early 1950s and in vitro was first seen in the 1970s. This method is a little more complex, but is often seen as the more popular method. Both are different from each other and neither one carries a guarantee of having a baby or getting pregnant.

History

Artificial insemination was first seen in animals such as cattle, sheep, horses and birds. This was seen in 1899 by Ivanoff, and he was also the first person to successfully perform an artificial insemination procedure. This occurred during the World War II in concentration camps of the Nazi. However, it is not known whether or not pregnancies were successful or not.

In 1973, the first IVF treatment was done, and in 1978 Louise Brown performed the first successful IVF procedure. This success was seen from stimulating egg growth and controlling ovaries and the egg production with various fertility drugs.

Benefits

Both AI and IVF are now available for couples suffering with infertility issues all over the world. Women who are single as well as lesbian couples often times go through these processes to have a child of their own when a male partner is not present. AI is a rather simple procedure in comparison to IVF. However, in vitro even has shown to be successful in older women who are in their 50's and 60's once they have gone through the menopause stage. Once menopause hits, eggs are no longer produced however the uterus functions properly. When women want to get pregnant at this age, donor eggs are typically used and while the eggs are not the woman's, the baby is theirs and a bond is formed over time.

Precautions

With artificial insemination, there are a few things to look out for. However, in order to increase your chances of success, there are fertility drugs that your doctor may recommend you taking. The drugs may have possible side effects, but vary from person to person. With AI, many cycles may be needed in order to have a successful pregnancy. One of the concerns that come with in vitro is the chance of multiple pregnancies. This is a risk simply because numerous eggs are implanted into a woman's uterus. With multiple births come numerous problems such as miscarriage and newborn deaths.

Considerations

AI is often the first procedure infertile couples opt for. There are a few factors that play into the success rates such as egg count, sperm quality, and overall gynecological health. For AI, the average cost is $500 and for IVF, the cost can vary widely on a few different things. The typical cost runs about $10,000 and can go as high as $30,000 if you plan on using donor eggs. Both procedures have been helping women for years have children of their own even when infertility issues are present.
