Being able to give manicures and pedicures is increasingly in demand, and is a creative way to spend the day. Unfortunately, many of the products that are used to create beautiful nails release chemical fumes that are unhealthy and have a nasty odor. An air cleaner is a must, and here are 5 features that indicate its effectiveness. Filter for Chemicals—Many of the products that make nails look so wonderful contain volatile organic chemicals that make the air smell bad; and they pose a health risk even with limited contact. Carbon-based filters are well know for their ability to trap and eliminate gaseous pollutants. But to be effective against these kinds of chemicals, carbon still must have a potassium iodide additive to further enhance its ability to remove the types of chemicals that off-gas from many salon products. 24 Hour Operation---The fumes from the many manicures and pedicures during the day can hang around in the air for hours. That is why it is so important for your salon air cleaner to be able to operate safely around the clock, even when you are not there. Continually filtering the air will insure that you enter the salon in the morning to fresh clean air rather than fumes left over from the day before. A split capacitor motor is the feature that will allow the cleaner to operate safely and continuously. Check the technical specifications to make sure your cleaner has this type of motor. Multiple Particle Filters---Every indoor space has airborne particles. These include dust, mold and mildew spores, seasonal pollens that blow in from outside, and (believe it or not) pet dander, whether you have a pet or not. Add to the usual airborne particles the fine particles that go airborne from sanding and grinding of nails, and it doesn't take long for the air to become thick. Prefilters that can trap the big particles are an excellent first step at removing particles. In addition to these filters, your cleaner should also contain a HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting filter in order to be able to remove the invisible particles down to .3 microns in size. Steel Casing---Beware of cleaners that are made of plastic. Initially the cost may be cheaper. But this doesn't save you money in the long run. Many plastics will off-gas fumes of their own when the motor heats it up. A steel case will not send these noxious fumes into your air because of motor heat. 360 Degree Intake---This feature gives you endless options for where you will be able to place the unit.. Having a unit that is able to pull air from all sides gives you flexibility of placement. You can put it anywhere in your salon as long as it has 6 inches of clearance from any surface rather than having to put it in the center of the room for it to be effective.
