The Nokia 2730 Classic is another entry-level offering aimed at the so-called developing or emerging markets. Nonetheless, it is a 3G-ready phone with some mid-range features that would make it not entirely out of place among high-end smartphones. Dual-band UMTS and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support can be found within the simple "classic" bar shape of this handset. The 2730 also sports a 2 megapixel camera with video available in QVGA resolution over a 2-inch TFT screen that can display 256,000 colors. In common with phones in this class from Nokia, a built-in stereo FM radio is provided, and it can double as a portable music player. The 2730 Classic offers Bluetooth 2.0 compatibility (with AD2P), but all audio piped out through a non-standard 3.5mm jack. MicroUSB 2.0 is supported, and up to 2GB of user-defined memory is available, with a 1GB microSD card included. Battery life is rated at 17 days standby and almost three and-a-half hours of WCDMA talk-time.
Some of the many preinstalled software are an e-mail client and web browser. Nokia's very own Ovi Mail allows users to sign up on the phone without the use of a computer, making it possible to attend to all one's e-mail using only the 2730 Classic from now on! In some service areas, the 2730 Classic will also ship with Nokia Life Tools already on board, which provides access to localized useful information services, like hospital and post office locations, without having to log onto the internet first. Otherwise, its glossy attractive exterior only masks an otherwise basic entry-level cell phone on the inside.
However, on balance the overall package should appeal to Nokia's intended target demographic in particular the included suite of basic "PDA lite" applications. The on-board web browser is functional but should be exciting enough for the people of Nolia's target demographic who will experience the internet for the first time. As mentioned previously, the Nokia 2730 Classic is a cell phone aimed at emerging markets as an important part of the company's long-term strategic goals. Nokia is determined to produce cell phones for the developing world with some of the more robust features typically associated with smartphones. This is seen as a way to establish itself as a familiar brand for the time when these societies become mostly middle-class and able to afford Nokia's more upscale product lines. Indeed, no more than two years ago a device like the Nokia 2730 Classic would have been considered fairly high-end, but it is today solidly entry-level.
