Getting the Job Interview

In the past, an applicant, whose resume or resumes made it through the "maze" could count on one or perhaps two interviews before being hired. Not so today. Contrast the hard times articling law students have in 2010, versus the many positions that were open to them for their articling positions and being called to the bar. Now it's a case of be lucky that you have essentially an apprentice position, where you will worked for long hours, almost too some degree like a slave at a bosh auto shop. Whereas, in long gone years, it was a case that if you did not agree with your employers views and assigned work load you could find another job. Not so today. Take what you can, be abused, and be quietly grateful

During the 1950's and most of the sixties, "paternalistic" feelings between companies and employees were at their "height". Management went to work for a corporation and never expected to leave until they were retired. Loyalty was to the firm itself. Pensions and retirement were a way of life to be expected - Its just too many people and candidates to check out and run through the hiring mill.

The seventies saw the start of change. Energy shortages, inflationary pressures and imports changed the very way and ways that America did business. It was never the same again. Simple as that. Then recessions took place during the turbulent periods from 1971 to 1981 . The means , manner and way that American business managers though changed as well. They saw fellow workers , many with years and eons of tenure being laid off. Companies that did survive the recessions cut back on everyone from temporary hourly wage workers to even high salaried executives. Middle and upper managers also discovered that there was no such thing as "job security". Yet here we are in 2010 , along with the banking crisis, where upper top level management pays itself huge salaries and rewards itself with huge bonuses while they in essence wind down their workforce and essentially shut down and terminate their very companies under their charge and charges - the applicant can be sure of something else too - cover letters do count in 2010. But they can count for or against you depending on how they are written. The mass duplicated , generic cover letter screams out to the world the applicant , be they male or female , does not care enough to send an original. Shows poor attention to detail..

Remember that the HR department be it one person or a cadre of staff is hiring not just for one department but the whole company or organization. One of the newest interview techniques that is gaining popularity and prevalence appears to be "peer review". It seems for example that a firm will insist that members of the specific group involved will be itself involved in the interview process. Its true as this set itself will be working with the successful candidate - not Human Resources or even upper management. Its a case of sink or swim while accepting some responsibility in the acquisition process. Its somewhat like a crude cookie cutter approach. If the match is made you are in - if not you are out - and indeed do not have one single solitary chance. To meet these new demands and insights, resumes have to have a certain look , feel , content and length. To best understand why resumes have changed both in appearance, appearances and purpose, it helps to look at the job career employment market, American companies and how things were but just a few decades ago in comparison to today - As the kids say in this era - LOL - that is lots of luck, laugh or loud , or that you have not one chance in the world.

Its a real moral and practical dilemma. The old parable is that half a loaf of bread is better than no loaf at all. The corollary of this is that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. What does and ethical person do to get to the job interview phase and not be washed out in the process early on? Its the old case of the wisdom of Solomon , or in the case of 2010 do politicians go along with President Obama , his viewpoints and agenda and at least be in the radical Democrat's "good books", or do they realize the message of the Republican Boston recent election results ? Its a matter of have a seat in the house and a pension or have nothing ?
