With an estimated population of 100,646 in 2006, the city of St. John's is the provincial capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. From a colorful history and bountiful fishing industry, the city has evolved into a rich cultural and scientific community, and this development has invited people across Canada and North America to settle down in this growing city in the far eastern coast. Geography and climate

The capital city of St. John's is located on the southeastern part Newfoundland facing the Atlantic ocean and in fact it is the most easterly city in the continental North America. St. John's has a humid subtropical climate with cooler summers and milder winters than the rest of the nation. The city is unofficially dubbed as "Canada's weather champion" since among the nation's largest city, it is considered the cloudier, snowier, windier, and experiences more rain than the others.

Economic activity

St. John's economy is closely related to activities that involve the ocean, like marine industries and oil extraction. The city is said to have the highest proportion of scientists and engineers per capita for cities under 1 million in North America and these industries involving the ocean is a key to other economic activities like tourism which contributes much of the city's wealth. In a recent report, it was named as the most entrepreneurial city in Atlantic Canada and the economy continues to grow at present.

Notable attractions

The city of St John's is home to some historical museaums like the Provincial Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador which are located in the downtown area. One of the main attractions in downtown St. John's is George street and is believed to contain the most pubs per square foot than any where else in continential North America. The streets is also famous for several festivals throught the year. Overlooks the city of St. John is Signal Hill, which gives tourist a great panoramic view of the city and the surrounding coast. Some prominent landmarks are found there like the Cabot Tower which is dedicated to John Cabot's discovery of Newfoundland; the Johnson Geo Center, a geological station; and the North Head Trail. Signal Hill is considered a Canadian national historic site. Downtown St. John's also contain some wonderful recreational parks.

Crime rate

St. John's has one of the lowest crime rates among bigger Canadian cities. The overall rate is 22% less than the national average. Police services are offered by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and serves the whole metropolitan area.

The cost of living in St. John's is relatively lower in contrast to the other parts of Canada with inflation rate generally lower than the national average. Combined with factors like wonderful tourist attractions and lower crime rates, you might want to consider settling down in this expanding city on the Atlantic Canada.
