If you love action movies, then you'll love "The Road Warrior," starring Mel Gibson, returning in his role as "Max," from "Mad Max." Although this movie was made several years after the original, and doesn't require any previous knowledge of what happened to Max before this movie, it is indeed a great continuation of the same character, in the same world. Taking place after some future calamity that forever altered the face of civilization, this is a movie not to be missed.
The movie of course begins where the previous one, "Mad Max," left off. We have our hero out alone on the wastelands fending for himself in a world with no law and where only the strongest survive. Of course, there is the brief description of what got him to this place, how the world ended up to where it is. One of the many wonderful elements of this film is that is enough. Knowledge of the previous movie is not a requirement for enjoying this stunning tale.
We quickly see that Max spends most of his time in search for food, and fuel. Then he comes across something strange out in the wasteland. He finds a collection of people in a small fortified city, in the middle of the wasteland. They are strongly fortified, with a huge wall surrounding their city, and numerous ingenious forms of defense. For they have something very precious to defend. A enormous tanker of gasoline is in their possession.
Of course, it doesn't take long for the loose gang of bandits to surround the city, and demand the gasoline. They inform them that they won't destroy their city if they give them the gasoline. The inhabitants of this city seem to be between a rock and hard place. They have a plan to take their fuel, and escape to an area that is safe, and free from bandits and outlaws. A place where they can start fresh, and build a new society. The problem is, they don't have a way to transport the tanker of gas. Max, a recently admitted to their city, has a solution.
Only a few days ago, Max has seen a suitable vehicle to haul their tanker to the promised land. The only problem is how to get to the vehicle, bring it back to the fortified city, and get the tanker of gas out of there without getting killed by the bandits. Fortunately, Max has a plan. Along with his flying friend, they hatch a plan to secure the vehicle and bring it back to the city.
And this is the crux of the movie. The conflict between the city people, who are only after a safe life free from death, and the bandits, who want to take everything from them. As luck would have it, they have a secret plan that even our hero, Max, doesn't know about. And this will make all the difference. This movie was so popular that it caused many to go out and see the original that otherwise didn't know if it's existence. It is a must see if you haven't seen it, and is filled with memorable scenes and quotes, so you may consider it as an addition to your video library.
