Improve Your Finances By Improving Your Closet Organization

Do you need an incentive to improve storage in your home or your closet organization in general? If you have been avoiding making improvements in the way you store things around your house, here is something you know about.

According to a recent survey, disorganization costs Americans 15 to 20 percent of the average annual family budget. Ouch! That is huge. Do you believe it? Can you relate to it?

I know it is a problem for me. Whether it is in a closet, in the kitchen or pantry, or in the garage, I always seem to be looking for an item that I just saw the other day.

Unfortunately, when I can not find what I am looking for I usually end up buying it again. What most of us can benefit from is to follow the advice we have heard since we were kids: A place for everything, and everything in its place.

So if you are in need of a life less cluttered, and some organization that will actually save you money, there are some tips to follow. To simplify, we will refer to a clothes closet, but these tips can apply to any storage space:

- Get rid of all the stuff you do not use anymore. A good rule of thumb is when you buy a new piece of clothing get rid of one. This keeps you from getting buried in unneeded items.

- Organize by taking things out and putting them in piles. The first should be the clothes you love and wear all the time. The second is for things you like, but could live without. And the third is for items that you can giveaway, or need thrown away.

- If you have not worn it within the past year it probably needs to go into pile number three. You will be relieved with how much you can get rid of. It is really quite a liberating feeling.

- Before you begin to put things back consider how you can improve your storage area. What can improve your closet organization?

Perhaps it is time to give it a fresh look with new paint. Or you can add some lighting.

-Once you have done the touch ups, you will need to consider storage solutions such as shelving, baskets, rods, hangers, etc. There are entire systems you can purchase and put together yourself.

- Another good option is to hire a custom closet designer and installer. There are many companies offering this type of work for various costs.

You might be able to find a closet organizing company who can do the project for a just a little more than it would cost you to do it.

Either way, the cost of closet organization will more than make up for what it is costing you now to be disorganized. Take the time to discard what you no longer use and install a storage system that will save you time and money right away!
