There has been an incredible change in the role of the beauty salon over the last 15 years. Most shops emphasize total beauty by offering services that range from head to toe. With this evolution has come an influx of chemicals that has made customers uncomfortable and technicians and staff unhealthy because of repeated and prolonged exposure. Some shops are even offering gas masks when certain procedures are performed. But that does nothing for the residual chemicals that linger in the air for hours, sometimes days. More and more salons are realizing the potential for disastrous health consequences for letting these chemical fumes go unchecked. When considering the right salon air purifier (and having one is as crucial as providing chairs to sit in), here are answers to 5 of the most frequently asked questions by beauticians around the country. How does it work? Air should be pulled from all sides providing a 360 degree intake. This means it can be placed anywhere in your area as long as there is at least 6 inches of clearance from the purifier. The air should be slowly pulled through a series of filters that eliminate pollutants and return the air to the room fresh and clean. The benefit is that you can put it anywhere and not have to arrange your salon around it.. It will also allow you to pull the unit closer to a stylist's station if they are performing a service that is particularly smelly. What type of filter does it have? One filter won't work. A number of filters are necessary to do the job right. It needs to have a combination of filters for both particles and gases. The particle filters should include several sizes of pre-filters as well as a HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting filter that can remove particles as small as .3 microns. A purifier with multiple filters for particles means that your unit will be able to eliminate both visible and invisible particulates. A carbon-based filter that has an additive especially for chemicals is essential if the unit is to be effective.. Even though carbon is super effective at eliminating gaseous pollutants, without the additive for chemicals you will be disappointed with the results. Can I leave it on when the salon is closed? It is critical that your cleaner be able to operate continuously.. So yes, you need to be able to leave it on when you are not there so it can filter the fumes from the day's procedures and leave the air smelling fresh and clean as you walk in to start a new day. In order to be able to run safely, the unit should have a split capacitor motor. This type of motor is designed for high revolutions per minute What is the maintenance procedure? Maintenance should be a no muss no fuss affair.. Vacuuming the outside of the unit is as much as any cleaner should need from you. Cleaners that must be opened to wash, charge, or spray the filters are a pain in the neck. And while you're doing that the air isn't being cleaned and your stylist isn't doing what they are best at. What is the filter life? With multiple filters, you should expect your filter to last 3 to 5 years. You will be able to tell pretty quickly whether that's true about a unit by checking to see if the filter is warranted. A manufacturer who is able to offer a guarantee on the filter is serious about its quality and longevity.
