"Sin City," based on the best selling graphic novel by Frank Miller was a groundbreaking release when it first came out in 2005. Successfully bringing comic book action to the big screen, this instantly became a hit, and was seen by millions of happy movie goers. With several stories interwoven within the movie, sometimes overlapping, this movie is a must see if you are at all interested in the graphic novel genre.
The main story centers around a character who is an ex cop, and has been wrongfully charged witha crime. When incarcerated, he received a heart operation so he would be healthy when they executed him. He gets out of jail only to find an old girlfriend of his is in danger, and he must go at great lengths to protect her. Bruce Willis, in a brilliant performance, plays the cop wonderfully.
Another story is of a large brutish character who finds his beloved girlfriend, Goldie, has been killed. The police, of course, show up only a few minutes after the body was discovered, and a huge fight ensues. A huge battle ensues, with this large brutish, but loveable character throwing around police cars as if they were toys. It is quite apparent that only a movie based on a graphic novel could have such over the top action scenes.
A particularly interesting story is that of a paid killer who kills a cop by mistake. He didn't kill him by mistake, but only found aout after the fact that he is a police officer. Because the police officer is corrupt, he has to dispose of the body. This proves to be much more difficult than expected, as even when the seemingly dead police officer is decapitated, he can still talk. Although we aren't sure if he is really talking, or if it's a figment of the killer's imagination. Even so, this has a chilling effect on the killer while he tries and dispose of the body.
Several other smaller stories are interwoven into the story. The basic backdrop is Basin City, which is completely corrupt and filled with criminals, crooked policemen and gangsters who wouldn't think twice about killing you for your lunch money.
All in all, Sin City, is a visual treat, and the action sequences are fantastically believable, making it a worthy addition to your DVD library. It has some great lines, which make owning it all the more beneficial, in case you find yourself needing to watch snippets of it here and there in order to boost your party spirit. We here give "Sin City" two thumbs up.
