From personal experience, I can say that I have been audience to all sorts of different kinds of speakers. For example, a speaker at a dinner party will usually deliver his speech after the dancing and eating is over. This is why he's usually called an after dinner speaker. This is because after dinner speakers honestly can't expect their audience to be able to pay attention when they are hungry and bored. I've also noticed that there are different speaking styles used in order to get and keep an audience's attention. The role of a speaker requires this ability. For a speaker to be meet the expectations of the audience, he or should be able to give a very exciting and informing talk. There are a number of things which should be found in a speaker if the after dinner talk should hit its target. For starters, speakers need to be well prepared. The audience needs to be informed on a particular topic, which is why the speaker needs to be well-informed and adequately knowledgeable on the topic. It's very unlikely for an audience to sit through a speech that is very uninformative or false. It is crucial that the speaker first understands the audience to address. In order to connect with the audience, you should fit the message with the type of crowd you will be delivering the speech to; i.e. if you're speaking to a young crowd, you should avoid using old fashioned expressions. Conversely, you shouldn't use terms that are too modern (i.e. technical terms or slang) when addressing an audience which is predominantly made up of old people. In a case where the audience is a mixture of the two groups of people, a good speaker will make sure to balance the way he or she addresses them. It's also important to make sure that you can drive your points home with the audience. Since everyone has taken their meals, there could be a tendency of getting bored if the speaker does not involve them. Keeping the audience interested in the speech is an important thing to keep in mind. This way, the people's attention will be won and the speaker can be sure that the message is striking home. A speaker should likewise avoid talking to just one particular group in the audience; it's important to be able to relate to all the members of the audience. Humour is also an important aspect of any good after dinner speaker. Humour is one way of making sure that the audience will pay attention to the speaker. Humour comes in a lot of styles. Some stories between the talk, some light jokes, associating the current events to the message. As a last point, every successful after dinner speaker will need to be eloquent and proficient in speaking. If a speaker wants the audience to pay attention, he needs to set the right tone for the speech. Of course speakers aren't infallible, but the best ones are willing to own up and correct previous mistakes.
