Benefits of Using Oxo-Biodegradable Plastic Bags

Regular plastics will remain in the environment for up to 100 years, posing risks to water sources, soil, wildlife, and marine life. Because of the threats to our environment that includes deforestation and pollutants entering our water and soil, more products are being created to minimize the impact on the environment. Oxo-biodegradable technology is one 'green' technology that is helping to reduce the chemical impact on the environment. Oxo-biodegradable plastics are made from a by-product of oil refining which would normally be wasted. Oxo-biodegradable plastics will turn to biomass and small amounts of water and CO2 which reduces the use of landfill space. Organic waste in oxo-biodegradable bags is exposed to air helping anaerobic biodegradation. The result is the release of CO2 rather than harmful methane.

The chemical degradation process in Oxo-biodegradable plastic bags involves the reaction of large polymer molecules of plastics, which is comprised of only carbon and hydrogen, with oxygen in the air. The biodegradation rate from this reaction is greatly increased to a matter of weeks. Oxo-biodegradable plastic bags on the ground will quickly degrade because the degradation process is expedited by the sun's UV rays. Oxo-biodegradation is basically the entire degradation process, from polymer to water, carbon dioxide, and biomass. Once an oxo-biodegradable polymer becomes biomass, it is consumed by plants and the carbon becomes fixed which prevent its release into the atmosphere.

There are many benefits to using oxo-biodegradable plastics bags. Oxo-biodegradable polymers can be recycled without negatively impacting the quality of the end-product. The recycling process actually deactivates the additive. The plastics contain an additive which causes the plastic to degrade under conditions of ultraviolet light and oxygen, degrading the chemical bond or in the chemical structure of a plastic Recycling plastics means energy consumption is greatly decreased as oxo-biodegradable polymers require less material and energy to produce and transport. In addition, only a 1/3rd of SO2 is produced, only a 1/2 of the nitrous oxide is generated. Oxo-biodegradable plastic bags are affordable, thin, lightweight, and resistant to moisture. In addition, oxo-biodegradable polymers do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Because no soybean or starch derived materials are used, oxo-biodegradable plastic bags do not use up with foodstuffs.

Uses of oxo-biodegradable plastic bags includes: shopper-bags, kitchen waste bags, bread bags, dog feces bags, bags to line plant pots, bin liners, frozen food bags, plastic mulching turning to biomass, and much more. Using oxo-biodegradable bags in the agriculture industry means a reduction of pesticides and a reduction of waste. Compared to other biodegradable products, there are no odor smells after degradation. In addition, plastic bags are protected from degradation by antioxidants until they are ready to be used. Their storage life is extended when stored in a cool and dark place.

Today, we are becoming a more environmentally conscious society. New technologies are constantly emerging to help reduce our impact on the environment. Oxo-biodegradable plastic bags is one 'green' solution that is growing demand and will be an important part of the future of creating a cleaner and greener world.
