Fun games and funny games, being ubiquitous freeware, are currently the kind of video games that are most popularly played. Being very easy to play and quick to get the hang of, it's no surprise that flash games are so appealing. With the introduction of Java and Flash into all browsers, flash games have become insanely popular and can now be played by anyone who has access to the Internet and a computer. Before 1996, most websites were generally media free since most webhosts couldn't support the amount of RAM and storage space required by most forms of media. Websites then were generally very bland and plain looking, and the Web was used mostly for research and writing.

The release of Macromedia Flash in 1996 changed all this. By installing this on certain websites, games became animated and interactive. Macromedia Flash likewise improved the overall functionality of most websites, aside from the innovations it introduced to online games. Macromedia Flash was originally intended to be used to make animation easier, and technological developments in programming eventually led to Flash, which paved the way for simple Internet games which could be played on the browser.

Since then flash games had a steady following, but the real boom in their popularity occurred in 2001. As quick, distracting forms of interactive entertainment, flash games and funny games appealed to a wide audience, most of which had only recently started using the Internet. Because of this sudden rise in popularity, web developers and programmers decided to streamline the most popular games at the time. Their efforts were highly successful, prompting the launch of remakes of games which were originally played on different platforms.

These flash games weren't without problems, however. They were mostly technical problems, the most common of which was that the technology couldn't keep up with the demands of the public. Sometimes the animations on action games would lag if too many people tried to play a particular game at the same time, and in some cases older computers couldn't play Flash-based games properly. This is why in 2004 Flash MX and Action Script 2.0 were developed. Thanks to these programs, Flash applications were better organized and the media on websites functioned more efficiently. 2004 likewise ushered in the era of scoreboards in Flash games, which only helped increase the format's popularity.

Today flash games and funny games are played by almost everyone who is online, and this mass appeal is generally thanks to the simplicity and fast pace of the game's storylines, if it has any. Bejewelled, which is one of the most popular cool games online, is being played by hundreds of thousands of different players at any given time. Users can now also create and play their own flash games on certain web sites. Particularly AddictingGames.com allows users to do just that, and it's one of the most popular hosts for flash games. People who need to be entertained or to relax turn to flash games since they're very easy to play. Flash games have surely come a long way from its humble beginnings, and from the looks of it, we'll all be playing them for years to come.
