There are many types of rugs. Oriental, Persian, Tibetan, Caucasian, War, Prayer, Flokati, kids, indoor/outdoor, hand made, amd machine made rugs. There are many different types of rugs that can be used for many types of things.

Oriental rugs, Persian rugs, Tibetan rugs and Caucasian rugs are all hand made. These rugs are made on a loom by hand or they are woven by hand. It generally takes a year or longer to make a large, hand woven rug. These rugs have designs on them that are called motifs. Every time the design or color of the rug changes the person making the rug has to change the fabric. And, because each rug is hand crafted, the design on each is just slightly different. Most of these hand made rugs are made with wool; however, some rugs are made of silk, animal hair (such as wool) or cotton.

War rugs are rugs that are made in Afghanistan. Women started weaving symbols of war into rugs when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. War rugs were also made in Afghanistan after September 11, 2001, depicting scenes from the world trade center tragedy. War rugs are in high demand today because many people see them as collectibles. Some war rugs sell for as much as $25,000.

Prayer rugs are generally hand made; however, prayer rugs can be machine made. Prayer rugs are one sided rugs that are used by Muslims and others to kneel for prayer on. The prayer rugs have an arch on one side for the person to put their knees under. Prayer rugs are used so that the person praying can be more comfortable and have a clean place to pray.

Kid's rugs are generally machine made and are meant to be used in a high traffic high use area. Kid's rugs often have pictures on them of things like roads, highways, planets, sports or other designs that would appeal to a child. Kid's rugs are made to go in a Childs room to accent the room. Kid's rugs are also used to give the child something to play with. For example a kid's rug with roads on it can be used as a highway for toy cars.

Flokati rugs are a type of rug that is of Greek origin. Flokati rugs are made of 100% wool. Once the rug is finished being woven it is bathed in mountain spring water and than hung to dry.
