The Sprint Cup Series is the top racing series for the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, or NASCAR. Prior to 2005 the series was known as the Strictly Stock Series, the Grand National Series, the Winston Cup Series, and the Nextel Cup, until the Nextel Cell Phones merger with Sprint, in which it then became the Sprint Cup Series. The series has national following though many of its ties are with the south eastern states of the United States as well as the Midwest.
The series sponsored by Sprint / Nextel Cell Phones, has a most prestigious and popular race in the circuit known as the Daytona 500. This race is 500 miles long is annually held at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. It is considered so popular because of the large purse that comes with winning the race as well as the fact that it kicks off the Sprint Series Cup Season. This is a unique phenomenon as most sports cap the year off with the biggest event where as this series sponsored by Sprint / Nextel Cell Phones begins with the biggest event of the year. In 2009 the television audience was over 16 million people. And yes, unlocked cell phones are welcome at the event, regardless of the sponsor.
The cars used in the Sprint Cup Series are of a very specific stock car nature, one that requires between 10 and 20 million dollars to field a single car for a single season. These front engine, real wheel drive cars feature a roll cage, a space frame chassis, a closed cockpit, a rear wing and an aerodynamic splitter. The cars must use a V8 engine, though modern technology has allowed cars to reach power outputs close 850 horse power while retaining the basic engine design. With these designs, the cars easily go over 200 miles per hour but because of the heavy body design of the vehicles the handling is poor. And this is where much of the skill comes into play. And no drivers rarely speak on unlocked cell phones while driving. Just kidding, they never do.

Once these were events kept popular by mostly southern states has now spread to the midwest and both the Atlantic and Pacific coast of the United States.
