Back Pain Treatments

Most people experience back pain at least one time in their lives. In fact, according to the National Institute of Health, it is the second most common neurological problem in the United States, preceded only by headaches. There are various ways to treat back pain. Some are more aggressive and risky, while other treatments are remedies that can be done at home. Of course, before you do anything else, you need to be seen by a doctor or chiropractor who can assess the damage and make recommendations as to how to get relief.

There are a variety of reasons for back pain. Tumors, muscle strains, osteoporosis, spinal stenosis and muscle strains are some of the most common causes. When one first feels back pain, it can cause the whole body to feel weak and tired. Your legs, hips and feet can all be affected by back pain.

The first action that should be taken when you have back pain is to apply ice and take some kind of pain medication, preferably an anti-inflammatory drug to help with any inflammation that may be present. It is also wise to rest for a day or so while you are using the ice and pain medication. Avoid lifting objects, walking up and down stairs and sitting on a chair or couch that is soft with no support.

If you have gone for a few days and the pain is still there, it's time for visit to the doctor. Visiting their primary health provider is often the first step that people take. A visit to the chiropractor is more favorable to some people. These two care providers will have very different approaches to your back pain. However, they both are able to order x-rays of your back to make sure there is nothing serious.

Once you have received your x-ray reports, your doctor will make recommendations, depending upon what he found in the reports. If there is nothing seriously wrong with the back, your doctor may recommend some physical therapy such as massage, ultrasound, heat, and whirlpool baths. Once the back muscles have been strained, it will be your doctor's goal to see the back and abdominal muscles strengthened. This will include avoiding activities that will injure the back again. To eliminate further back problems, your physician may encourage you to practice proper lifting, gentle stretching exercises and use good posture.

Your doctor may prescribe a muscle relaxant if these procedures don't work. Some doctors recommend a shot of cortisone into the area around the spinal cord. The inflammation to the entire area will decrease. A shot of cortisone can last for several weeks, giving relief and reducing inflammation. This may give the body time to heal and strengthen.

Back surgery is not common, but sometimes necessary. Pain that can't be helped by the above methods or conditions that cause muscle weakness caused by compression of the nerves may warrant surgical intervention. Due to the risks involved and the long recovery period, surgery should always be the very last option.

There are various types of back surgery. Fusion is one such surgery where two vertebrae are joined together to prevent the pain from movement. A bone graft is inserted between the two painful vertebrae, which are then joined together with cages, metal plates or screws. The main problem with this type of surgery is that there is a greater chance of arthritis developing in vertebrae that is adjoining.

Partial removal of vertebrae or a disk is another type of back surgery. Surgery should be the last resort, as other complications can arise due to the invasive surgery. Many times, after one back surgery, people have to go for another surgery later to correct the new problems that arise from the first surgery. Based on their pain and condition, however, each person must decide what is best for them.

There are also many types of alternative remedies for back pain relief. Some of these include massage therapy, yoga, acupuncture and breathing techniques. Herbal supplements can help with back pain according to some people. Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Willow Bark and Magnesium are a few. Many people use pain patches and analgesic creams to help with the pain.

At some time in their lives, most people have to deal with back pain. While it is rarely a serious condition, the pain can become unbearable without proper care. It is important to acknowledge the pain, find treatment and do what you can to keep your back strong and healthy. While one can't expect back pain to leave immediately, you should be able to find some type of treatment that can help relieve the pain and make it possible to live a productive life.
