Remote backup is a service that provides backup and storage for computer files. It is also referred to as online or managed backup service. The program runs at scheduled times. Generally, it works at night or when computers are not being used. Data is collected, encrypted, compressed and transferred to the provider by the backup software. In some cases, it is to the provider's server. Sometimes it is sent to an off-site hardware. Off-site backup indicates the computer's vital data is sent off the main site. This is known as a disaster recovery plan. This includes system crash, accidental error, or natural disaster. It creates data storage of the most current information off-site. This makes sure that systems and servers will be reloaded with the most recent information. Sometimes this is called vaulting. A vault built for that purpose is where the backup data is stored. All businesses understand the importance of computer backup. If this data is lost, it is crippling to a business's well-being. This information includes customer and financial records that are necessary to keep a business running smoothly. If these records are lost, it negatively affects the reputation of the company. Relationships with clients and the ability to obtain new ones are negatively affected. Negative reviews from customers speak louder than anything else. Another consideration is government audits. Heavy fines may be incurred if important records are lost. The main prevention of these problems is professional backup. There are a few common features to this type of backup. Data is encrypted before it is sent to the storage vault. It is also stored in this state. Important data on multiple computers in a network are protected by network backups. Users are able to restore files themselves. No help from the provider is necessary. Certain providers permit access to the data via a normal web browser. Others do not. The data is compressed before it is sent. The result is less bandwidth requirements. There are some other features businesses may benefit from. Some require not just the backup of the server, but of the databases running on them. MS Exchange, Active Directory, SQL Server, System State, and open files are among these databases. Part of the service is called Multiple Versioning. This process involves storing different versions of the files. This means information can be restored from different points in time. Another is called Regulatory Compliance. Many companies must adhere strictly to government policies on legal discovery, disclosure, and privacy. The provider assists with the comprehension and compliance of these regulations. Redundancy is when multiple copies of the files are kept in different locations. Also, there is Seeding Location. In this process backup files may be sent using a portable USB drive. This is useful if there is a large amount of data to be sent and quick backup is desired. It does not require it be done over the internet. Directly related to this is Bulk Store. Using only a portable USB drive files may be stored. If a full restore is necessary, but there is little time, this is very helpful.
