Is It Better to Use a Box Spring or a Bed Foundation?

Most people purchase a bed frame, including a headboard and footboard, before selecting a mattress. The selection of a bed frame is usually dependant on two criteria: the necessary size, and the aesthetic appeal of the bed frame. When a consumer goes shopping for a bed, he generally knows how large of a bed he needs to sleep comfortably and how large of a bed will fit the designated space. The aesthetic appeal of the bed frame is simply how well the consumer likes the look of the bed. Comfort might also play a role in the type of bed frame purchased, such as selecting a padded headboard over a wood headboard.

Once the size and style of the bed are determined, it is time for the costumer to make the most important decision of bed buying-- selecting a mattress. Price range is usually the first consideration. Of course, every customer wants the best possible item for the price. Firmness, or softness, is also an important factor. If the mattress is a traditional mattress, instead of a memory foam mattress, coil count and coil gauge are also important factors. Once the bed frame and mattress are selected, it is time to make one more decision. The question of whether to purchase a matching box spring, or to put the mattress on a simple foundation.

What is the difference between a box spring and bed foundation? A bed foundation is simply a flat platform, usually constructed of corrugated board and wood. A foundation offers some support for the mattress, but because it doesn't have much 'give', can actually lesson the life of a mattress by allowing the mattress springs to wear out. A foundation can be built by simply cutting large, flat sheets of plywood and setting them inside the rim of the bed frame. This can be very useful in places where an appropriately sized box spring cannot fit.

A box spring is a grid structure, usually made of steel or wood. Many box springs also feature additional coils. This all adds up to a supportive base for the mattress. Supporting the mattress is important, as proper support will both prolong the life of the mattress and ensure that is it able to properly support the sleeping person. Many mattresses are sold in combinations with matching box springs, though it is not necessary that the box spring match the mattress in looks. However, it is important that the box spring match the mattress in size to achieve proper support. The customer can usually get a package deal when buying a mattress and box spring together.
