Sharm El Sheikh Guide

No Egyptian holiday is complete without a visit to the seaside resort town at Sharm el-Sheikh. Located on the lower Sinai Peninsula, along the pristine waters of the Red Sea, the warm and inviting climate draws sun bathers and aquatic sports enthusiasts year round. Life in Sharm el-Sheikh is a bit slower than Cairo, with plenty to see and do 24 hours a day.

Ras Mohammed National Park is a magnate for scuba divers, with some of the best underwater scenery in the world. This protected wildlife reserve is home to species unique to the region and can be visited on a full or half-day excursion from the Sharm el-Sheikh downtown area at Naama Bay. Take a motor coach journey for air conditioned comfort or sign-up for an ATV caravan for a wild ride through the scenic desert and crystal clean shores. To participate on the ATVs, drivers must be at least 16 years of age.

And if the ATV experience is not enough, Sharm el-Sheikh has opened a dune buggy course running from the in-town area to the outskirts of the desert. Following a trail in the safety of a caravan, driver and passenger run full throttle in the open-air carts for a desert safari at breakneck speed.

St. Catherine's Monastery is situated approximately two and half hours from downtown Sharm and makes for a great midnight adventure to climb "Jebel Mousa", or the Mountain of Moses. The trek commences between 2 and 3 am, with a target goal to reach the summit by dawn for breath taking views of the rocky valley below. St. Catherine's climbing excursions are chilly year round, so be sure to bring warm clothing for the climb. Tea, refreshments and blankets are provided at various checkpoints along the ascent. Although the Mount Moses excursion may be booked in Sharm el-Skeikh, this attraction fills up fast and is recommended that you reserve your space at the time of booking your Egyptian holiday. See your travel agent for details.

Sharm el-Sheikh is famous for its white powder sandy beaches, eclectic culinary delights, and best bargain shopping at the Red Sea. Take in parasailing, water skiing, submarine rides and an endless stream of water them parks for the kids. Located just to the north of Naama Bay, the sports centre at the Concord el-Salam Hotel is the place to be for horse riding, basketball, tennis and the only place on the peninsula with an indoor ice skating rink. Shop till you drop at the Naama Bay promenade, with restaurants, night clubs and parties on the beach to dance the night away.

Access to Sharm el-Sheikh is plentiful from most tourist destinations in Egypt. Flights operate daily from Cairo and southern cities along the Nile, or you may opt for a scenic drive via motor coach from Cairo for maximum savings on domestic travel. To the south of Sharm el-Sheikh lies another favourite Red Sea destination, the bustling seaport town of Hurghada. Boats connect daily between Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada with options for early morning or late afternoon departures.
