The European union have reached a deal with top cell phone and smart phone makers to make a single charging device that will work with all cell phones and smart phones. The deal includes makers such as Motorola Cell Phones, Research in Motion (BlackBerry cell phone makers), Apple, LG, Nokia, Samsung and Sony-Ericsson. With all these companies working with the same charger will cut down on waste and the charger itself will be more energy efficient.
Having the biggest names in the smart phone / cell phone industry sign off on this with European Union, marks a clear understanding of a greener planet for the future and that planet is more important than competition that involves unnecessary waste. Now people upgrading to new Motorola Cell Phones will not have to buy a new cell phone charger or throw away an old one. For consumers it is win / win and for the environment it is win / win, which essentially means, at least to a degree, that everybody wins.
This is something North America; in particular, the United States ought to do. Will this save the planet on its own? No, of course not. But the question is, if you can cut down on waste without hurting yourself or those around you, and with very little effort, then why not do it? That is always a question that comes up in environmental discussions. Sure, there can be debates about global warming, saving the rain forest and other things, these are debatable matters. What cannot be debated is that if you can save a little energy produce a little less, and do it all with little to no effort, why is it not being done? Is that the lazy kind of society we are a part of? Is that what we want to be associated with and remembered as? Just because it's a nominally easier to not do something, we won't?
Let us follow the European Union into greener pastures. There is no debate. And if those big name companies will sign onto such an initiative in Europe why not in the United Stated or all of North America, too? Let's change our current destructive path on easy task at a time. It's easy and if it makes a difference then why not? No excuses citizens and companies of the United States, our neighbors are doing it and we can, too! Universal cell phones chargers for all!
