Eight years ago, the first programs offering VoIP technology surfaced on the internet. At that point, the only people I knew who used the programs were those with family and friends overseas. It was their way of getting out of a high home phone bill. All you needed was a camera and a microphone. But on the business end of the world, the use of VoIP was slowly starting to take off.
It wasn't long before businesses began switching to a VoIP provider and it made perfect sense. As your business grew, you didn't have to worry about installing new phone lines or equipment. Your phones weren't tied down to the one spot in the room that had a telephone jack either. Today, in 2011, it's almost becoming obsolete not to use some type of VoIP provider. The system is extremely flexible and it has significantly cut down telephone costs. A VoIP business phone also has the same great features as a PBX system, offering easy transfers, hold music, caller ID, voice mail, and so much more.
While businesses have been enjoying VoIP for years, it has only been recently that more people at home are making the switch. As of 2010, VoIP Companies have over 663 million registered users. But there are many players in the game now. There are currently dozens of companies and more recently, cellular companies have started venturing into this area too. There are companies that are trying to compete with home phone providers by offering very low monthly bills and unlimited global calling. But VoIP business providers aren't going to stand around in the dark and let two or three large companies have all the fun. More companies that only catered to businesses are now offering home plans -and I don't just mean VoIP for those who work from home.
Home residents don't want to be left behind while technology continues to advance. If the big businesses can take advantage of all these wonderful features, why can't we? Home residents want to cut their phone bills too. With an increased interest, more companies begin to sprout up, giving home VoIP some much needed competition. Many people, myself included, tend to forgo the home landlines all together and just stick with our cellphones. But the only reason we do this is because phone bills are exorbitantly high. The best way for any telephone provider to stay in business is to switch to VoIP, offering low rates and great service.
In another decade, it will probably be impossible to find any home or business still using a landline. The internet has already taken over the rest of our lives, so it was only a matter of time before it took over the household phone too.
