There are plenty of things you can do to have fun with your family, but most people are looking for an activity that is safe and affordable. You can take time to hike to a prime location that is stocked with fish, bed down for the night and camp and get up first thing in the morning and try to catch a few of the lake or stream's best offerings. Cook them up and enjoy your bounty together while you talk and enjoy one another's company.
An experience like this is challenging, which is always great for kids. In a completely safe and comfortable environment, they can experience the challenge of catching, or not catching, a fish. They might work hard all afternoon and have nothing to show for it. They might also catch more than you do, so be prepared for a little taunting and teasing if they end up more successful than their parents.
The experience, no matter how challenging, is very rewarding. Catching a fish is a great thrill. Even greater though is getting to spend time together outdoors. It gives you time to talk and to reconnect with your child. You are also able to teach them a new skill that might turn into a hobby. Kids love experiences like this and they do not even view it as a teaching moment. They just love being outside, getting the undivided attention from their parents and being able to experience something that is fun for everyone. If you want something fun to do with your child, take them out to catch some fish.
