We all dream of walking into a stone-floored kitchen with thousand dollar appliances humming steadily in corners as we throw on a pot of slow drip coffee and sit down in our breakfast nook to watch the sun curdle over the garden. Here's how you can more readily achieve your dream. You may be thinking I don't want to have to move or spend thousands of dollars in order to have the kitchen of my dreams. You don't have to. All it takes is some minor redecorating. First think about the color of your kitchen. If you have wallpaper, it may be time to strip it and repaint. You want something neutral and inviting. Yellow is a good color. Light orange or red is also a good idea. Next, get a big plant to anchor a corner of your kitchen, or some smaller greenery to sit on the windowsill if your kitchen is tight on space. Cacti are fun because you don't have to water them frequently and they're so hardy. If you don't have lots to spend, think about the little things, such as kitchen cabinet knobs and switch plates. These small items are easy to install and can completely change the ambiance of your kitchen. If you want to, refinish your cabinet finishes in a darker, more elegant color. Finished hardware is the last step. Then think about the lighting. If the kitchen light is fluorescent or otherwise harsh, invest in a floor lamp and anchor it near the kitchen table. That will allow you to cast warm, soft light when you need it and it will make the entire room cozier. Now when it comes to your appliances, yes you will have to spend thousands of dollars in order to have the Sub Zero refrigerator or the Viking range, but those are technicalities. You can make stir fry just fine on the range you have. When all is said and done you will feel like you have a new kitchen. And if you're on a budget but still want a new appliance or two, buy a new microwave and a coffee maker. Because quality coffee to start your day is a large part of a desirable kitchen, and a clean, new microwave will look great with your new cabinet finishes. A great kitchen is what you make it. Pay attention to color, detail and comfort and you'll soon have the kitchen you've always wanted.
