By : Stewart Wrighter

We are all very familiar with labels in the retail industry. They are on food packaging, clothing and are even stuck on our fruit. These price labels abound in the supermarkets and retail outlets and we see the pricing guns busily clicking away as staff are packing the shelves with products.

The story behind these labels is quite amazing as they contain an enormous amount of information other than the price of the product. Bar codes allow the store to monitor the levels of stock and know when new orders are required. They also provide important time and date information which is essential in many industries particularly in food and groceries. The labels on pricing guns are available in a huge variety of designs and can suit many different functions. The most widespread uses are for pricing, dating and inventory coding and usually will be used for all of these. Amazingly these gun labels have been in use for more than half a century in the retail industry. They have the advantage of being very efficient and easy to use and their purpose and use has grown along with the industry.

In the food industry today, the issue of health and safety is paramount and date coding is vital in the any food related retail outlet. Date coding on labels allows foods to be tracked easily provide safe usage times which are essential to keep foods within date limits. The pricing labels are an essential element in the way food products can be efficiently and economically labeled with expiry dates. Another handy feature of gun labels allows a store to print a customized label with their name, logo and personal messages as well as leaving space for the price and inventory code of the item. Different colors of labels and ink allow for a variety of options and individuality of the store.

As an additional feature of pricing gun labels is the option for the store to add what is known as a security slit to prevent people from making swaps with price labels. If a customer should attempt to remove the label from an item the label will split along the length of the security slit and is not able to be placed on another item. This makes a good way of protecting the store from unnecessary price losses. A store has the option of purchasing promotional labels. These are usually larger than standard labels and offer the retailer a great method of attracting the attention of customers to certain features. The larger print also attracts the eye of clients. They can be used for sales and special promotional events.

Millions of retail businesses around the country all need to use some form of price marking system for their products. Therefore, the market in supplying these types of systems is ever growing and expanding. New technologies will make the manufacture of products with ever changing capabilities much in demand and the future for the pricing and label industry looks very promising.
