Persian rugs are beautiful creations and expressions of style. These rugs are one of the oldest types of oriental rugs. Persian rugs are made in Iran, which was once known as Persia. These amazing rugs were made in Persia for hundreds of years and were used as expressions by the artisans that crafted them.

Many people in the world collect these amazing hand made rugs. Hand made rugs are great to collect because they are beautiful and each one is unique. Not only are hand made rugs beautiful but many hand made rugs are considered to be fine art. There are many hand made rugs that are 60 years old and older, they are considered to be antique hand made rugs. Another reason individual's collect hand made rugs is because of the amount of time that goes into making one. It can take a year or more to make one hand made rug.

The beauty of a hand made rug is remarkable. Every time the design or color on the rug changes the weaver has to change the wool. The motif of hand made rugs is amazing to look at and think of how much time and effort went into the rug. Also, even rugs with a similar design are unique because each artisan adds their own personal touch.

Persian rugs are many rug collectors favorite rug to collect because of their unique nature and the artistic expression evident in each piece. Each of these rugs are made with an eye towards quality and can last for many years. There are many antique Persian rugs because they are made with high quality craftsmanship.

Persian rugs are generally made from wool, cotton, silk or animal hair.

Persian rugs often have a motif that indicates something on them. The tree of life on a Persian rug indicates eternal life. A Persian rug with the shape of a vase on it symbolizes the vase of immortality. A Persian rug with a weeping willow shape on it symbolizes death.

The layout of a Persian rug is either all over, central medallion or one sided. All over means the motif (design) is all over the rug. Central medallion indicates that the motif has a central point. One sided indicates the motif is mostly on one side of the rug.

There are subtypes of Persian rugs including Abadeh, Nain, Kashmar and Afshar. Subtypes are named after the place in Persia where the rug is made.
