It can be a challenge to get your kids interested in experiences they can share with you and the entire family. They might prefer to spend time alone or with their friends, or they just might not take an interest in most of the things you plan. The trick is to find something adventurous and fun so they forget their surly adolescent ways for awhile. There are plenty of different options and one of the best is spending time in nature. Once you are experienced and you have all of the canoe accessories and kayak rigging you need, you can plan a trip to share with your kids and enjoy the numerous benefits of spending time with them outdoors. Kids of all ages love being outdoors. It is a chance to breathe in fresh air and it makes them feel healthier, but chances are they will not even realize this. The real thrill of being outdoors for kids is getting to see the animals and the natural surroundings. Kids love seeing wildlife, even if it is just squirrels or rabbits. Spending time in a forest area or by a lake will expose them to a bevy of different creatures. Many are even creepy crawling creatures like bugs and appeal to little boys and girls with an interest in the grosser things in life. You can combine a trip down the river or around the lake with some exploring of the wildlife in the area and turn the trip into a nature lesson that is still plenty of fun for everyone. Since you will be engaged in boating on the water, it is a great time to teach kids some of the responsibilities of navigation. You can let them operate the water vehicle while they are out, making them truly feel a part of the adventure. If you think they are too young to handle steering or directing, talk with them about the responsibilities while you handle things. This will get them interested in the process and in the future when they are older and more capable, they will be eager to do it on their own. Taking kids on an outdoor adventure is a great way to teach them some of the important safety tips that go along with spending time outdoors. Though kids these days rarely need to understand outdoor survival tips, it is still a great thing to learn. During your trip, you can share safety tips or you can create a make-believe scenario in which survival is important and the kids need to help get everyone to safety. Best of all, this is a great way for both kids and adults to get exercise without feeling like they are focused on a workout. Kids love to just let loose and run and play outdoors, but they might not be all that into structured exercise routines. Chances are adults feel the same way, even if they force themselves to participate in organized exercise. An outdoor adventure gives you plenty of exercise, but you are having so much fun, you do not even realize you are working out.
