Saving the planet is a concern that affects many lifestyle choices. Many people try hard every day to conserve gasoline by driving less. Others conserve electricity by turning off lights and unplugging appliances that are not in use. The use of reusable fabric shopping bags has reduced the amount of plastic bags that are used and end up in landfills-- not to mention our neighborhoods and natural environments. Because garage doors are rarely replaced, many people might not think about the environmental considerations involving them. In fact, there are many ways in which garage doors can help a household go green. Many companies that offer installation of their garage doors also offer complimentary haul away service of the old doors. A garage entry service company representative should be able to tell what they do with the old doors once they remove them. Some installers might just throw the old doors away. Some service providers take the old doors, if they are in reasonable condition, to builders resale shops. Still others might donate used doors in good condition to charities like Habitat for Humanity. Many garage door companies recycle used doors. The metal, wood, and other materials from old garage entries are often recycled into consumer products, including new entry doors. Garage doors made of recycled materials are not only made of old door parts. Many lumber mills have unused wood fiber waste that is used to make many consumer products, doors of all sorts included. Doors made of recycled wood fibers look like real wood because they are made of real wood. Buying recycled wood garage doors saves trees. Environmentally-friendly garage doors are more than saving waste and saving trees. They also save energy, which everybody is trying to conserve these days. Replacing old garage doors with insulated doors stops heat loss through the garage. Not only does this save energy, it also saves money. That is why many insulated garage door purchases qualify for energy tax credits, which adds up to more savings. Insulated garage doors also help save money at the gas pump. When a vehicle like the family car is stored in an insulated garage, the engine and the interior of the car remain at a higher temperature than if the vehicle were stored outside. This results in not having to warm up the engine or car interior for very long, whereas cars parked outdoors in the winter can take several minutes to warm up. The less time the vehicle must idle to warm up, the less gasoline is used. There are many ways in which replacement garage doors are eco-friendly. Some are made of recycled materials, some recycle, and many help conserve energy and money. It's just one more way to "green" the home and make conservation a lifestyle, not just a choice.
