If all you need to do is buy a few fish supplies and toss some food into an aquarium, things might go smoother in your household. However, if you are willing to make the commitment to an animal that has special needs, the emotional rewards will be great. You might need to shop for items such as dog diapers, but in the end, the connection you create with a living creature will make it all worth it. Bathroom issues are a big part of a special need pet's life. You are likely to have to take precautions to protect your furniture and carpet if you pet has emotional or physical problems. There are plenty of ways to prevent accidents and to clean them up when they do occur. The important thing to remember is that your pet is not being bad. They are unable to exercise the control over their bathroom habits as a non-special needs pet would be able to do. If your pet experiences a bathroom accident, do not punish them. Gentle discipline might work if the problem is behavioral, but if there is a medical problem, you have to find other ways of dealing with it. It is important that your special needs pet get the proper medical care. If you have an aging pet and you have noticed behavioral changes, make sure they see a doctor. Vets can help you find solutions for dealing with challenges and they can also make sure there are no serious problems. Some special needs are a result of diseases or injuries that can be healed or cured. An experienced vet can help you determine the best way to deal with your pets particular needs. Supervision is necessary when you have a special needs pet. If your pet is home alone all day, you might want to consider altering a few things so the pet does not get injured further and so your home is not destroyed. Consider using a crate to keep your pet safe. This limits movement, which might be necessary for an injury that is healing. There are also pet sitters and daycare facilities that help your pet cope if they need more supervision than normal. Finally, take into consideration the at-home medical treatments that might be necessary for a special needs pet. If your pet is sick, medication is likely to be required. Come up with a way to give medication that is not stressful for you or your pet, such as hiding it in treats. This keeps everyone calm, but still gets the medication into their system.
