All About Watches: From the Pocket Watch to the Bulova Wrist Watch

Watches in general supposedly began production around the 1850s, and with time they have only gotten better. Watchmakers have evolved from a handful of manufactures in the 1800s to the thousands of brands available to you now, many of which produce Swiss watches. The Swiss are said to make the best watches, but these fine timepieces also come with pretty hefty price tags attached to them as well. Some people can afford watches like the Concord Mariner watch or Concord ladies watch, and some people can't.

I think this is one of the most important reasons that watch companies have decided to make watches in various types, brands, and prices — which is also probably the reason the watch and time piece industry is as big and popular as it is. It really doesn't matter what you want, chances are you can probably find it. The top types of watches are pocket watches, analog, digital, and quartz.

Wrist watches can actually be considered a separate genre as well. The wrist watch (depending again on the type) will usually have a fairly simple band or bracelet along with an easy to open backing for replacing batteries. This is one of the more common timepiece styles.

Next we have pocket watches, which have been around since the 1500s. These watches quite obviously go in your pocket, and gentlemen that would wear these watches centuries ago were usually assumed to have a pretty high status. Not everyone in the 1500s could afford these watches. Fortunately, pocket watches have become a lot more accessible today. Some of the most popular pocket watch brands available these days are the Swiss Military Airport Blue, Astronaut by Bulova wrist watch, Wenger Men's Standard and the Charles Hubert.

If pocket watches aren't your style, that's fine as well. Perhaps you are looking for something a little less fancy, but you still want a quality watch like the Concord mariner watch, Bulova wrist watch or Concord ladies watch. If so, you would probably enjoy an analog watch. These watches in particular usually have two to three "arms" depending on the exact design. Unlike digital watches, analog models do not store or share any information. The digital watch has a mini computer inside that can access whatever information you enter into the watch and store it for later use. The analog watch only functions by mechanical gears and the digital watch usually runs on computer or battery operated power. Analog watches might seem like they would cost more money, but I have found digital watches that were a few thousand dollars as well.

Last on the list are the quartz watches. These are the most popular watches because of their consistency and accuracy. The reason behind this is the way the inside of the watch is set up. In most cases with something like an analog watch, you need to re-set it every couple of days or weeks because the parts inside the watch are so fragile. With quartz watches, however, the watch only vibrates at a very minimal amount. This usually means that the watch only loses about 10 seconds per month. Also, another reason the quartz is a more popular substitute for the other watches is that it doesn't need winding, which is a nuisance for some people, and the batteries need to be replaced every few years.
